

Leslie Alexander Leiper, aged 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexandria, VA on August 2, 2012. Beloved father of Karen Haffmans and loving grandfather of Olivia and Maarten Haffmans. Born in 1933 in Bronx, NY, Leslie received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University in 1955 and served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 in Fort Rucker, Alabama. He then went on to receive his graduate degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and spent over 20 years working for the Defense Contract Audit Agency.
Despite his deep love for all things New York, Leslie moved to the Washington, DC-area in 1979 to open the local office of Leonard G Birnbaum & Co, where he was partner for 30 years. In 2009, along with good friend and business partner, Dora Clarke, Leslie formed Clarke Leiper PLLC.
He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia and New Jersey societies of CPAs, the Society of Government Accountants and the Contract Management Association. Upon hearing the news of Leslie’s passing, one of his colleagues said, “Heaven just got a lot smarter with Les there.”
Along with his daughter and grandchildren, Leslie is survived by Helen Leiper of Sarasota, FL and Eleanor Sullivan of Cape Vincent, NY. Arrangements are pending for a celebration of life on September 24, 2012 in or around Alexandria, VA. His immediate family gathered in mourning on August 3, 2012 in Springfield, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leslie's name to the Covenant House in New York or the Central Union Mission in Washington, DC.
