

Lyman Ray Butler, 77, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on December 22, 2023 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was born Sept. 15, 1946, in Jasper, Missouri to Mary Marie (Burton) Butler and Andrew Butler.
He graduated from Lamar High School, Lamar, Missouri, in 1964 and shortly thereafter, at the age of seventeen joined the military. Lyman was a Viet Nam veteran, retiring from the United States Marine Corps June 4, 1984, having served twenty years. He then began a career in information technology at the Alexandria, Virginia, School System from which he retired after twenty-seven years.
Lyman and Fay Elizabeth Parker were married on February 27, 1979, in Arlington, Virginia.
He is survived by his sister Nettie Agnew of Parkville, Missouri, a brother Alva Butler (SunYo) of Columbia, South Carolina, a sister-in-law Leona Reynolds of Moorefield,WV, a niece and 2 nephews, his next door neighbors Dan and Peggy Capello and Laura Hughes who were truly his family, and most special of all: Jenna, Tom, and Danny Capello, who he counted as grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Fay, his parents, his older brother Joseph Loyd Butler and his brother-in-law Edwin Agnew.
Lyman was an avid gardener who maintained a meticulous yard, was an advocate of composting and loved flowers, especially roses. He watched old westerns with his brother on television or the news with his sister, but left to his own inclination, he soon changed the channel to a cooking show.
An inurnment service will occur at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
