Maria Esther was born in Havana, Cuba where she lived until she was forced to leave in 1962 as a refugee from Fidel Castro's regime. She spent some time in Miami with her young son then moved to live with her sister's family in New York. There she worked in the fashion industry as a seamstress until she was joined by her husband about a year later. The family relocated to Arlington, Virginia where her husband had a position at the Organization of American States (OAS). She prided herself in domestic responsibilities by taking care of her family until her son left for college. She then worked for 10 years as a Channel Consultant at Garfinkle's Department Store in Washington, D.C. until she retired at age 70+ to care for her first grandchild. After her husband's death she lived in her own apartment at her son's house in Annandale, Virginia. There she continued to lead a very active and full lifestyle, even driving her car well into her nineties.
She traveled extensively with her husband throughout South America and Mexico, lived in Madrid, Spain where her husband was Secretary to the Prime Minister of Cuba and leisurely to Europe. Paris was her favorite city. Every summer she returned to Miami Beach, Florida for an extended stay at the beach with the family and reunite with her many friends.
Maria Esther was much admired and loved by those who knew her. She was very social, loved to entertain at home, visit friends, go to restaurants, the theater, travel, play canasta with her group at the Alianza Ibero Americana, and shop. She had a presence about her made friends everywhere she went. She created close connections with those she touched and carried them with her throughout her life.
Maria Esther above all loved her family - her husband Alfredo Perez Zaldivar, her son Alfredo and her daughter-in-law Dawn, her three grandchildren Alfredo, Christopher, and Nicole. She was an avid participant in all their activities, never missing a ball game, dance or school function. She was in daily contact with her Niece Ana to keep up on the events of the Fontanills' (Laura and husband Alfred), as well as other nieces,Ellie and Gloria, who live in California. She was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.
Maria Esther lived a long and full life transitioning between cultures, times of plenty and times of scarcity. She will always be remembered for her persistence, joy of life and determination to not give up.
