Marie Antoinette Lemoine Knight--mother, grandmother, aunt and friend -- passed away on July 13, 2018 at the age of 93 in Springfield, Virginia. She was dignified, vibrant, opinionated and intelligent, and was an inspiration to all those who knew her. She loved her family fiercely, and was funny and feisty until the very end. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dick, her son Rich, and her grandson Jonathan. She survived these losses with strength.
Mece, as she was known to her oldest friends, was born on October 10, 1924 in Oakland, California, the daughter of Jules and Katherine Lemoine. She was raised in Walnut Creek, California with her older brother and sister JJ and Dode. She attended the University of California Berkley and married the the love of her life Richard Knight in 1947. They raised their family in Walnut Creek, with the family business, Knight Brothers General Contractors, in Oakland, California.
She moved to Sandy, Utah in 1991 following the death of her husband Dick in 1989. There she lived next door to her daughter Cindy, son-in-law Bob and grandchildren Robin and Rose Rothfeder. She was active in the Ladies Literay Club, was a willing chauffeur, and attended every dance and piano recital plus miscellaneous school performances for 17 years. During that period of time her daughter Kitty was living all over the world with her husband Dave and children David, Andrew, and Jonathan Wildes. Mece visited them often, even though by her own admission she hated to travel. But she was "hooked on her grandchildren." They adored her, will miss her dearly, and were lucky to have her tremendous love and support throughout their lives.
Marie moved to a retirement community in Springfield, Virginia in 2008 to be close to her daughter Kitty and family. She made close friends there and is survived by her special friend Steve Guback. These years were marked by the passing of her grandson, Jonathan Wildes, in 2013, and also by the birth in 2015 of her great grandson Ezra Jon Wildes, of whom she was very proud. Her life remained full of the love of her family and the admiration of the staff who cared for her.
A Memorial Service will be held on September 1, 2018, at 1:00 pm at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 6800 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA. Donations in Marie's memory may be made to Best Friends Animal Society (www.bestfriends.org) or to Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/about).
