Mary K. McHugh

Of Springfield, VA on October 1, 2016 at age 98. Beloved wife of John R. McHugh; dear sister of the late Emma Ruth (Philip) Booth; caring grandmother of Marie Golden and Melissa Golden; and great-grandmother of 2. Preceded in death by daughter Rita McHugh Gibbons; son Michael McHugh; great-grandson Kevin; brothers Norman Kempel, Richard (Margaret) Kempel and David (Teresa) Kempel; nephew Michael Kempel. Mary Lou is survived by sister-in-law Ethel Kempel. Surviving nieces and nephews are Karen Newshutz (David) Stilwill, Christine (Peter) Rees, Kathy Kempel Burkle, Margaret Kempel, John Kempel (Joanne), William Kempel (Janet), Dennis Kempel (Pixie), Steve Kempel, Kevin Kempel (Alexa), Kathleen (Gus) Beder, Nancy Loftus (Joseph) Saunders, Ellen McHugh (Robert) Pearce, Mary Christine Loftus (Dr. Paul) Remick, Kathleen Loftus, and Robert McHugh Swanton. Mary Lou is also survived by numerous great nieces, great nephews, and their families.

Mary Lou was born to Clarence C. and Emma (Rohner) Kempel on October 27, 1917 in Akron, OH. She grew up in Stow, OH, and graduated from Stow High School. After high school, Mary attended St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in Akron, and became a Nurse Anesthetist. Mary worked with several doctors and helped so many people she came in contact with. She truly enjoyed what she did – she was a people person with a lot of energy and love to give. She was very dedicated to her work and was loved, respected, and admired by those who knew her. Mary Lou was a loving and kind wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a resident of Greenspring Village in Springfield for many years and will be missed there as well.

Friends welcome on Thursday, October 6 from 9:30-10:30 am at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, MD.
