Michael was born on August 4, 1936 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All of his primary schooling was done
at St. John’s Cathedral School in Milwaukee through the 12 th grade. He went on to attend Marquette
University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1958. After completing Officer
Candidate School in Newport, RI, Michael was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. While he
was stationed in Long Beach, CA, he met Helen – then a graduate student in Zoology at the University
of California Los Angeles. Michael and Helen were married in Irvington, NY in 1964. Later, he would
earn a Master's Degree in Financial Management from The George Washington University.
Michael’s Navy career took him and his family all over the world, including tours in Hawaii, Greece,
Italy, and England. During his tenure as Executive Officer on USS JENKINS (DD 447) from 1967-1969,
Michael completed his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He served as Commanding Officer on USS
MANLEY (DD 940) from 1972-1974, when the ship was stationed in Greece. During this tour, MANLEY
played a crucial role in countering Soviet naval presence in the Mediterranean Sea. Michael served 28
years as a Surface Warfare Officer, retiring at the rank of Captain in 1986. Following his military
retirement, he worked as a defense contractor, most notably with DARPA, until he retired in 2006.
Growing up in Wisconsin, Michael was a diehard Green Bay Packers fan attending games as a young
boy and was a shareholder as well. He volunteered with the neighborhood swim team; the Boy
Scouts of America; and as an usher for the Ft. Belvoir Catholic Community.
Michael, son of Leo and Frieda; brother of Mary Ellen; husband to Helen; father to Brian, Kathleen and
Maura; father-in-law to Nancy, Jim and Patrick; and patient grandfather to Charles, Hayden, Thomas,
Margaret, Anne, Molly and Brennan, will be honored with a Mass at Ft. Belvoir on Monday, August
31 st , 2015, at 10:00 AM, presided over by longtime friend of the family, Fr.John Mudd. Immediately
following the Mass, there will be a burial with military honors at Quantico National Cemetery on
Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.
