It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Brummitte Knight, 83, of Burke, VA, who passed away on June 16, 2026, in Alexandria, VA. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, and will be missed and fondly remembered by many who loved her.
Nancy was born in Norton, VA, to Nathaniel Brummitte and Mildred Steele Brummitte on January 1, 1943. She went to school at John I. Burton High School in Norton, VA, and moved to Washington, DC in 1961 to begin her career with the U.S. Department of Labor. She met her husband and married Travis A. Knight on November 18, 1961, in Baltimore, MD. After marrying Travis, she transferred to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and got to work on a number of great projects during an exciting time for space exploration. She had the privilege of working on the Mariner and Mars Pioneer Programs, mainly supporting the Mariner IV Project, and providing Dr. Carl Sagan with research assistance related to the program.
Nancy took a break from her career to focus on her kids and family, and then reentered public service to work as a mainframe computer programmer for the Central Intelligence Agency until her retirement. She was a long time parishioner at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Burke, VA. Nancy was an avid baseball fan, and loved cheering on her beloved Baltimore Orioles, and later expanded her fandom to the Washington Nationals (unless they were playing the Os!). In her retirement, she enjoyed reading, computer games, gardening, travel, and competing in Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football leagues with her husband, Travis.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Travis; her parents, Nathaniel and Mildred; and her sister-in-law, Jeanne Knight Muri and her husband, William F. Muri Jr.
Nancy is survived by her son, Brian Knight and wife Michelle; her daughter, Amy Sullivan and husband Tim; and her grandchildren, Fiona and Keagan.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 6509 Sydenstricker Road, Burke, VA, 22015. A Celebration of Life reception will be held at St. Andrew’s immediately following the service. The burial service will be at 1:00pm at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA, after the reception. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in honor of Nancy to Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
The family of Nancy wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all of the staff and caregivers at Silverado Memory Care of Alexandria for the incredible care they provided Nancy the past couple of years. They would also like to thank the caregivers and staff at Sunrise at Silas Burke House for the care they provided prior to Nancy’s move to Silverado.
