DOB 9/24/1968 – DOD 5/22/16
He was adopted by Sylvia Lancaster shortly after birth in Utah. Sylvia made a point to let Patrick know that he was of Irish heritage and always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with him.
He and his mother, Sylvia, moved to Springfield, VA as his grandfather, William A. Pappenheimer was the project manager for Massman Co. to build the Foggy Bottom Metro Station in Washington, DC.
On June 4, 1976, Sylvia was married to Carl Johnson, who also adopted Pat, and they set up home at 5308 Danbury Forest Drive, Springfield, VA. Pat attended Kings Park, Kings Glen, and Lake Braddock, completing his high school in May, 1986. A lot of his time growing up was spent at the Danbury Forest Pool and was on the swim team from the start. Lake Accotink Park was also a great play ground for Pat and the neighborhood kids. When Pat was 9, a neighbor boy, David Roberto became part of the family. David spent various periods with other relatives but always returned 5308 Danbury Forest Drive and the Johnson family.
After graduation, Patrick joined the Army for 3 years. He became a paratrooper and a medic and after training periods was assigned to HHC, 27th Engineering Battalion, Fort Bragg, NC in support of the 82nd Airborne Division, separated as a corporal on 8/6/89.
Pat started college at Frost Berg, Maryland where he was a member of a fraternity and the rugby team. After Sylvia died in 1990, he moved home and went to George Mason, where he got his BA in 94, his MPA in 97, and at the time of his death was taking courses as a Ph. D. student at Virginia Tech. Pat was only a dissertation short of this degree. In 95 he interned at the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute and was a Treasury Management Intern at the Department of Public Works with Prince William Country, VA.
After his MPA he went to work as an Analyst with Analytic Services with the AF in the Pentagon. In 99 he switched to Scitor to work in Hampton, VA as a system analyst to support the Aerospace Command and Control. In 11/2000 he returned to the Pentagon to work on automating Air Force requirements and planning business processes. Pat had 18 years providing Advisory and Assistance Services to the US Air Force, mainly at the Pentagon supporting operational capability requirements liaison with the Joint Staff, Air Force Major Commands, Aeronautical System. Pat was separated from this work in March of this year and was enjoying free time before landing another job.
Pat’s passions were free diving, especially at the Frying Pan off Wilmington, NC where his ashes will be spread by his buddies. He also was a member of the USA Underwater Hockey team, recently competing in the World Tournament in South Africa on the Masters Team and was looking forward to the Nationals in Denver next month.
On Sunday, May 22nd, his friend, Michael Lamberti Sr., found him on the kitchen floor, applied CPR, and called 911. He went by ambulance to Fairfax Hospital, but was pronounced dead. He will be missed by many with whom he shared his ready smile and good spirits.
