Alexandria, Virginia—Rajender Kumar Vohra, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully on July 31, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on December 8, 1939, in Lahore, British India. He lived a remarkable life dedicated to his family and a distinguished career in public service.
Rajender served his country with honor as a diplomat for the Indian government. His career took him and his family across the globe, living and working in Bangladesh, Switzerland, Russia, New York City, Panama, Washington D.C., and Hungary. After retiring from the diplomatic service, he continued his work in public affairs, serving the governor of Uttar Pradesh, India.
In 1999, Rajender moved to the United States to be closer to his family. He worked for the Associated General Contractors of America until his final retirement, after which he dedicated his time to caring for his beloved wife.
A man of great charm and warmth, Rajender was an avid reader who loved discussing world affairs and was known for his friendly and extroverted nature. He found great joy in good food, long walks, and, most of all, spending time with people. He will be remembered for his kind heart and his willingness to always help others.
Known for his playful sense of humor, Rajender couldn’t resist pulling a prank during the drive to New York City for his son Sanjeev’s engagement party. He called Sanjeev’s fiancé with a tone of urgency, claiming that Sanjeev had forgotten the engagement ring back home in Virginia. To make matters worse, he said, they were forced to turn the car around to retrieve it—delaying the entire celebration.
And even in his final days, he would wink after getting extra ice cream after his uneaten meals.
Rajender is survived by his wife of 65 years; his three sons Robert, Neeraj, and Sanjeev and their spouses; and his beloved grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on August 15th at Rajdhani Mandir in Chantilly, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Inova Schar Cancer Center or Pratham USA.
