I first met Richard when he started his illustrious career at the FBI as a young man.  His choice to join the FBI family was the perfect choice for him, as it was for many of us youngsters right out of school.  He was a true patriot with fidelity, bravery, and integrity and we were blessed just having known him.  That being said...The journey of grief is the hardest you will ever walk and there are no words, no hugs, nothing that any of us can do to help you thru it ... it is a road you must walk.  Remind yourself daily (or hourly) that no one has forgotten you - we love you and pray for God to comfort and walk with you - and you are not alone (even when you feel like you are).  When my Dad, and then my Mom, died I used to think the world was still revolving for everyone but me and how COULD they go on with their lives as if nothing had happened.  Everyone who knows and loves you is walking right beside you and hurting with you and for you.  We all were blessed by Richard and always will be -- there is no hole in our hearts -- he IS still there, forever and ever.

Ted and are are so sorry for your loss.  Richard and our daughter Laura Schafer Buhler were friends in High School and beyond.We lived in Franconia for 18 years.  Richard would come over now and then, he even got involved in the Santa Caper (our girls took my Santa and held it for ransom) by sending an official letter from the FBI composed as only Richard could. Ron Jan and Doug.  I just heard the news. I remember Scott as a little boy walking off the plane in SLC and hugging Mom. I hadn't seen him in thirty years but that means nothing. Rich will be missed by all of us in Del Ray who knew him. His loyalty and devotion to his friends and family was second to none. We'll remember him as always the first to join in, whether to celebrate a wedding or birthday, or to commiserate at a funeral. We will also always remember Rich's pride at his long service to his country. I, for one, can't imagine next summer, without Rich bugging me to accompany him to the shore, or sitting beside me at Nationals Park  bemoaning the bullpen's performance in another lost game or cheering another Harper home run. I'll miss you, Rich, and am proud to have called you my friend. My thoughts and best wishes are with all of your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Richard since 1980 and we spent a lot of time together. Over the last few years we lost contact with each other, but I will always cherish the fun and conversations that we have had. I will miss him. He was a great person to be around. RIP Richard. My deepest condolences to the Hastings family. I was very sad to hear the news of Rich's untimely passing.  I worked with Rich for several years handling international visits.  He was a close colleague and pleasure to work with. I appreciated his great sense of humor and the funny stories he would share. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.  

I was truly saddened to hear of Rich's passing. I met Rich in the waning years of his career. While our paths only crossed for a brief time, I respected his old school charm, classiness, and sense of humor. He was always quick with a smile and a warm hello. When he learned that one of my siblings was gravely ill, he sought me out and offered a shoulder to cry on. I will always remember that. Apparently we were neighbors and, although I never knew exactly what street he lived on, Alexandria seems emptier knowing he is no longer here. God bless you, Rich, and Godspeed on your next journey.

I'm very sadden to hear of the recent passing of Mr. Hastings.  I met him in early 1992 when i was the Unit Chief of the International Training and Assistance unit (ITAU).This was during the time that the FBI began to host a number of international visits from the Newly Independent States of Eastern Europe. I would say without the slightest sense of hesitation that Mr. Hastings set the standards for how to organize effective liaison for such visits. Also during this time, the FBI was deploying literally hundreds of agents to conduct international training around the globe.  Mr. Hastings was key member of the liaison unit which ensured the prompt and efficient deployment of agents by facilitating the acquisition of visas and other documents needed by the agents in a timely manner. I considered Richard to be the embodiment of a professional and competent federal employee. You should know that he was a good and gentle man. I considered him a good friend and I will miss him.

Was shocked and saddened to hear about Rich.  As with many, will remember him for his smile, sense of humor and love for the Redskins, softball, and the FBI.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many friends who will miss him so much.

 I was so sorry to hear of Scott passing ( he will always be Scott to me) after spending time at grandmas house as kids nothing but great memories, I wasalways sorry we lost touch. May god bless and watch over you Aunt Janice and Uncle Ron at thistough time. My love to u both.

I met Rich through a mutual friend at the FBI back in 1993.  I will remember Rich for his wit and sense of humor.  He took great pride in his job.  I had the opportunity to socialize with Rich outside of the office back in the 90s, whether it was STUMPS Fantasy Football, Happy Hour at Harry's, or a trip with the fellas to Seacrets in Ocean City.  When Rich was out of his suit, he was every bit the jokester his friends and colleagues knew him to be when he didn't have his professional face on.  We are shocked and saddened by his loss, and we offer our sincere condolences to the family.

Our deepest condolences on the passing of Rich.  Richard was the best of the best, bar none.  I first met Rich at FBIHQ circa 1984 or 1985.  I was a teammate of Rich on the FBIHQ softball team and spent many weekends with him and our fellow teammates on the pitch at BollingvSir Force Base and other fields of dreams in the D.C. Area.

Richie was a ball of fun to be with despite that Deadskin aka Redskins tattoo of his!  Rich loved the FBI and gave his all to the FBI throughout his long and very distinguished years of service to the Bureau and the USA.  He will be sorely missed, for sure.  Richie has left us way to soon.  It was an honor to have walked along the path of life with Rich during his time among us here on Terra Firma.  

May Richie have eternal happiness with the Big Guy in Paradise.  God bless Rich and all of you.

My deepest condolences to the Hastings Family. I had met Rich while working as a Legat and back at IOD. He always had a good sense of humor and kept things in perspective. Richard was one of the first people I met when I began my FBI career in 1982. He made me feel part of the FBI family from the start and started a lasting friendship. We worked together on a few projects over our Bureau careers and played softball in an FBIRA and co-ed church leagues. I was honored when he agreed to be a part of my wedding party.
I know Richard was a dedicated FBI employee and Redskins fan. He was very proud of the Redskins jersey he received upon his retirement. 
Knowing that I grew up in western PA, Richard tried, unsuccessfully, to convert me to a Redskins and Capitals fan.
I will deeply miss one of my dearest and closest friends.

When I first started working in Wash., DC. I was in a shopping center in Alexandria Va and I someone called my name using the PA system from a company sedan vehicle he was driving. Scared me to death and everyone in the parking was looking at me. He was a great person and will be forever missed.

I worked with Rich for several years prior to my retirement in July 2009, he was a source of good humor and fun while we worked.  I was so sorry to hear of his passing.  My deepest condolences to the Hastings Family, may he rest in peace in the hands of the Lord.

Rich was a fixture at FBIHQ for as long as I can remember.  We met in the late 80s during my first assignment to Headquarters.  We remained friends for the next 30 plus years.  Rich was always a pleasure to be around.  I enjoyed his sense of humor but really respected his dedication to the FBI.  I feel particularly blessed that I was able to connect with Rich after his retirement.  Rest in peace, my brother!

Rich and I became very good friends right after we met in 1993. We would eat lunch together almost every day over at Harry's. We went to Redskins games, played golf, and went on many trips over the years. So many great memories, laughs and Rich stories. Too many to mention here. He made me laugh all the time. He and I shared the same sense of humor and were always making fun of life's oddities and quirks. He was a good man with a big heart.  He will be sorely missed.  My thoughts, prayers and condolences are with his family and all his friends at this sad time.

I met Rich shortly after joining the Bureau and he instantly made me feel like I was part of the FBI family.  He was someone I could look up to and admire.  I am glad that our paths crossed once again before he retired.  He will be missed.  My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Like others I'm deeply sadden by Richard's passing. My thoughts and prayer go out to those he loved and touched, especially his parents, family and FBI colleagues. Richard, more than most, was a true and dedicated FBI employee he will be deeply missed but not forgotten.

I met Richard as soon as I got to HQ in 1985 and he was a friend that loved to have a good time. He loved the BU like a brother and would always get things done no matter what. Rich, God Bless, you will be sorely missed and I pray for your family's loss.

I met Richard my second day at work with the FBI 35 years ago and he always made me laugh with his impressions and sense of humor. I will cherish all the great memories we had together. He definitely touched so many people and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and all his friends.
