Bob was born on January 1, 1940 in Big Island, Virginia. He graduated from Big Island High School in 1958 and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). He married Janet Ballinger in 1961. After she passed away in 1966, he married Agnes Vivian Gillock in 1970. He wanted “to be remembered as a good husband and a good father to these kids that God allowed me to help raise. Second, I want to be remembered as a Christian serving the Lord at Bethlehem Baptist and Fairfax Baptist Temple. Third, I want to be remembered as a bridge builder in the DC area so people can travel from point to point.”
Bob was a diligent supervisor and business owner over the years, building over 100 bridges all over the DC area. He received many awards recognizing his safety, integrity, pride, and leadership. He served at his churches as a deacon, going on visitation and soul winning, Sunday School teacher, led nursing home ministry, bus ministry, volunteer labor, and always willing to lend a hand at the church. As well as “fishing for men,” he loved to be on the water fishing with family or friends. Family and friends remember his ability to make them laugh with his witty sense of humor. “Bob the Builder” and “Buster” were his nicknames. A favorite snack was Moon Pies and RC Cola.
