It is with our deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of 83yo Robert Payne Plimpton (Bob) of Springfield, Virginia. Robert passed on June 29, 2026, at A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center on Fort Belvoir surrounded by his family.
Robert P Plimpton was born in California on July 30,1942 as one of the Identical twins (Richard his brother) to Allen Vance Plimpton and Eleanor (Cummings) Plimpton. He was married to Mary Louisa Lesher (parents Edward and Sieglinde Lesher) on January 21, 1969, Basel, Switzerland.
Robert lived an amazing, fulfilled life. He was an Eagle Scout, a singer in a Barbershop Quartet with his brothers and sister. He was a college graduate from Chico State University and Served 33 years in the United States Army retiring as a Colonel. Once he retired from the military he continued to work as a contractor for BAE Systems for 10 more years until he finally retired to enjoy life on the golf course.
Robert had many hobbies and loved to stay busy with them. He loved music, singing, and playing the guitar. He was passionate about the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, shooting, yardwork and sports. He played basketball in college, but his love was for the game of Golf. He loved to watch it, play it or collect anything from it. He was a reader and an amateur photographer in his own way. He loved taking pictures of wildlife as much as his family or really anything he thought was interesting. But his biggest hobby was making friends, and he was good at that!
Robert (Bob) had a way about him that you couldn’t resist. He was smart, funny, caring, and thoughtful. He would do anything for anybody at any time. He was the life of the party, and everyone wanted him around.
Robert is survived by his very large family. His loving wife Mary, his three sons James, Steve, and Jeff. His two beautiful daughters Kathy and Laurie. His daughter-in-law Dianna, two sons-in-law Billy and John and a total of 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Robert also has an older brother Harlow, sister-in-law Mary and younger sister Ann in California.
I know Robert is safe in the lord’s hands and singing his heart out with his brother Rich…….when he isn’t playing golf. We miss you and love you so much as a husband, father, friend and all-around amazing man. Until we meet again.
Love you now and Forever
