

Russell was born in Camp Pendleton, California to Sue VanCuren and Donald Edwards on November 7, 1980. Russell was raised in a military family and lived many places during his life and attended school in many places. He settled in Northern Virginia after graduating from Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia. Following high school, Russell entered the Virginia Army National Guard and completed Combat Engineer training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Russell worked as a landscaper for many years and during that time he went to college. He graduated from NOVA with an AA degree and he then received two Bachelor’s Degrees from George Mason University – one in business administration and one in Finance/Economics. For the past two years, Russell has been a bank examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Department of the Treasury. He loved that job!
Russell was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking and kayaking. One of his greatest loves was soccer. While living in Okinawa, Japan, he was on a travelling youth soccer team that played against Japanese teams. He also played on adult soccer teams and volunteered as a youth soccer coach.
Russell is survived by his parents Sue VanCuren (Will) and Donald Edwards (Joan); his brothers Jeremy (Heather) and Chadd (Laura); his nephew Christian; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Russell has also left behind his beloved dog, Mosby, and cat, Hayek.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 19, 2026 at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield. There will be a gathering and light fare at 1:00pm which will be followed by a short service at 2:00pm.
The family wishes any memorials be sent to an animal shelter or youth soccer league of your choice. The family also wishes to extend its sincere thanks to the trauma team at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
