Ruth was born on January 14, 1929, in Maryville, Tennessee, the second of nine children to William McKinley (“Mack”) and Edna Millsaps. She attended school in Maryville and later graduated from Draughon’s Business College in Nashville. Following her education, Ruth began her career as a federal employee, serving in several agencies, including the United States Department of the Navy and the United States Army.
After relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, Ruth became a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Alexandria, where she remained for more than 70 years. She was an active participant in the Mixed Patch Sunday School class and formed many lasting friendships. It was at church that she met her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Clyde Vernon Hampton Jr. Together they built a loving family and welcomed their son, Clyde “Chip” Vernon Hampton III.
Ruth found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved traveling and cruising, cross-stitching, baking, doing puzzles, and walking in the sunshine.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Stacey (Justin) Callaman and Jenna (Joe) Tabatabaian; her daughter-in-law, Karen Hampton; and her four great-grandchildren, Carys and Lincoln Callaman, and Isla and Ace Tabatabaian. She is also survived by her siblings, Harry Millsaps, Martha Cartwright, and Jerry Millsaps. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde; her son, Chip; and her siblings, Edward Millsaps, Fred Millsaps, Kenneth Millsaps, William Millsaps, and Betty Moore.
Ruth’s long and beautiful life was a testament to God’s grace, and she now rests peacefully in His eternal presence.
Ruth will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband. Service arrangements will be shared as they become available.
