Sarah McDevitt Hazard Poh

March 29, 1944June 26, 2020

Mrs. Sarah Hazard McDevitt Poh died in her home on the evening of June 26, 2020 in Springfield, VA due to ovarian cancer. At her side were her husband, son, Isaac, and daughter, Sarah.

Sarah/Sallie Poh was born on March 29, 1944 in Cortland, NY, to parents Lloyd Joseph and Edna Marie Hazard. She graduated from Broome County Community College in Binghamton, NY, with a degree in Dental Hygiene. She became one of the first Naval Academy Dental Hygienists after graduation where she met her husband in her dental chair. Sarah married a Naval Academy graduate, Lawrence Charles Joseph Poh Jr., 52 years ago on June 8, 1968.

Sallie and Larry traveled the world with Larry’s career as a Naval Officer. They resided in the Philippines, Italy and Germany, Annapolis, San Diego, Pensacola, and traveled to many countries. Mrs. Poh was a devout Catholic, a devoted mother, and a beacon for her brother, Joe, her sisters/brothers-in-law, their families, numerous cousins, and friends.

She has touched so many, many souls throughout the world; her kind spirit, infectious laugh, and big heart were an inspiration to everyone she met. She was insistent on doing the "right thing" and being a good person to others especially those in need of an understanding ear. She was a vibrant character with a twinkle in her eyes, a smile on her face and a contagious laughter that would light up a room.

She is survived by Lawrence C.J. Poh Jr, David Walker Poh, Isaac Lloyd Poh, Sarah Keenan Poh and predeceased by her son Lawrence C.J Poh III.

Mrs. Poh will be buried next to her son, C.J. Poh III, on Monday, July 6, 2020 at Fairfax Memorial in Fairfax, Virginia. A mass will be said in her honor at The Basilica of Saint Mary’s in Old Town Alexandria. All are welcome to attend and celebrate. Please feel free to stop by our backyard after the internment; bring your own chair and snacks if you would like. Bottled drinks will be provided as well as hand sanitizer, extra masks and as always be safe and practice social distancing etc. There will be a toast to mom with some Jameson! 6408 Kroy Dr. Springfield VA

After a class reunion,.....
"we did not admit,
but knew
that as much as we vowed to return
to this old familiar port.....
all sailors know
our tiny ships
must all succumb to some final hour,
and it's the breath of God that fills our sails
and gives us power"

Sally has crossed the bar ahead of us, but we will all meet again in our final port of call.
God bless you Sally.

Sallie Poh, "Our Gal Sal",
In the short time which we were blessed to have Sallie in our lives, it was so very clear that she was a gift from our God, a human being whose love, compassion and caring were what legends are made of. A role model example of what our Creator had in His mind when He brought us all into His universe, she showed us the way spiritually, morally and with affection second to none. Thank you, Sallie for your being that eternal beacon of light. We will meet again.
With our sympathy,
Lucille and Ed Cercone
