SSgt. Nicholas Adam Sprovtsoff, USMC

Marine Staff Sergeant Nicholas Adam Sprovtsoff, 28, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011, during combat operations in Helmand Provence, Afghanistan. He is survived by wife Tasha, daughter Lanie, and a child due in November, of Oceanside, CA; his parents Sandra (Mark) Dutton of Michigan and Jack Sprovtsoff of Grand Blanc, MI; and sister Jessica of Ann Arbor, MI.

Born April 4, 1983, in Flint, MI, he was a 2001 graduate of Davison High School and a 10-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. On November 19, 2007, he married Tasha Fogle in Hawaii.

He was last stationed at Camp Pendleton and assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. His duty assignments were December 2002-2005 AAV Crewman/Crew Chief, 2nd AABN; 2005-2009 AAV Crew Chief/Section Leader, 3rd MARREG; EOD School student, Florida, NAVSCOLEOD, 2009; EOD Team Member, 1st MSOB, 2009-2011.

Personal decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with valor combat V, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with valor combat V, two Army Achievement Medals, two Combat Action Ribbons, and two Good Conduct Medals.

Nicholas was genuinely loved by many and will be forgotten by none. He loved being a Marine and was strong, smart and willing to do any job set before him. He balanced that inherent toughness with a dazzling, freckled grin and a kind heart, especially for his wife and children. He touched many lives and has left a monumental absence in the hearts of many.

Also surviving are maternal grandmother Jacquelin Reinertson of Davison, MI; parents-in-law Sue and Rod Fogle of Colville, WA; sisters-in-law Elizabeth (Ross) Challinor of Colorado Springs, CO, and Alaina Fogle of Seattle, WA; brother-in-law Robert Fogle of Seattle, WA; uncles Alex (Dorothy Nolan) Sprovtsoff of Michiana Shores, IN; Michael (Carol) Sprovtsoff of Fernandina Beach, FL; Ray Sprovtsoff of CO; Chuck Reinertson of Traverse City, MI; Tom Reinertson of Bellevue, WA; aunts Susie Williams of Gary, IN, and Debbie Reinertson; and several loving cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather Donald Reinertson and paternal grandparents Alexander and Winona Sprovtsoff.

Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA, handled the service and Nicholas was buried at Arlington National Cemetery Thursday, October 6, 2011. Pastor William Grady of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Swartz Creek, MI, officiated and Master Sgt. Chris Donald gave the eulogy. Marine Gunnery Sgt. James Peyton served the family as casualty officer.
