Steve was born in Williamsport, PA to George DeLong and Elizabeth DeLong. As a military family, they moved around until they laid down roots in Springfield, VA. A gifted athlete from a young age, Steve was a standout golfer. His love for golf lasted throughout his life.
Steve graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering and later earned an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, attending night school while working for Howard County in his early career. He spent his career in land development, including many years with Mobil Land Development and later Cavalier Land Development, where he notably helped lead the development of Ashburn Farm. He was a pillar in his community, exemplified by being involved in HOA boards, school boards, youth sports, and being named Citizen of the Year in 1999 by the Eastern Loudoun Times. He was also instrumental in starting the Loudoun School-Business partnership.
Steve was a very driven individual. He worked very hard, was an avid runner for many years, and loved to cook and take care of his family. He could literally do it all. Steve also knew how to have a good time, and he loved the beach and vacations, especially Dewey Beach, where he spent many happy days by the water. More than anything, Steve loved his children and his grandchildren and worked hard to make sure they had what they needed.
Steve is survived by his brother, Michael DeLong; his children, Margaux Nicolette and Erik DeLong; and his grandchildren, Hudson and Hadley Nicolette. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elizabeth DeLong.
A Memorial Service will be held in his honor on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA. Burial and a reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (https://www.michaeljfox.org).
