

Wilda Jane Olson Getman passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026 in her home in Springfield Virginia at the age of 93. She was born on September 17th,1932 to William Samuel and Idda Bell Olson in Indiana Pennsylvania and was the 8th of 10 children. She is preceded in death by her parents William and Ida Olson, her siblings Ronald Olson, William Olson, Alvin Olson, Illa Roi Gill, Ruth Graff, Joanne Beitzell, and Delores Libengood.
She grew up in a large family consisting of her parents William and Ida, and her siblings William, Ronald, Alvin, Ruth, Illa Roi, Jinny, Joanne, Joyce, Helen and herself. She spoke often of her times growing up living with such a large family. The times of all fitting into one car a 1926 Pontiac which had to be crank started. All sibling having to take turns taking their baths in the same bath water from oldest to youngest. Helping with weeding the gardens, bushels of bean that had to be stemmed and snapped. Chasing the chickens that had their heads cut off to prepare for dinner’s. Her sister’s taking her bobby pins out of her hair at night to put in their own hair. The big pancake dinners all waiting patiently for theirs to come. She stated in a memory she wrote in the 1992 “Even though Mom and Dad couldn’t give us a lot of the material things, the things which they gave us were worth more than what money could buy, i.e. love, a sense of values, and our wonderful brothers and sisters.
She graduated from Blairsville High School in Pennsylvania, then came to the DC area to live with her sister Joanne until she found a job working for Office of Personal Management as a secretary for the Federal Government. Her career there landed her 38 years of service from 1950-1988.
She met the man of her dreams at a dance and married him; Richard Getman on Nov. 2, 1962. In 1964, they bought their first house in North Springfield Virginia. In 1964 they had their first child David, then in 1968 they had their second child Lisa. Their marriages brought grandchildren, Danny, Ashley, Aaron, Brianna and Keeley. She made many fond memories with all her grandchildren. They enjoyed playing dominos, making chocolate chip cookies, and she attended many of their sports events. Each one held a special place close and dear to her heart. Then came along her great grandson Sammie, which put a smile on her face constantly, but she was unable to meet her great granddaughter Rosalie who was born four days before her passing.
Wilda and Richard enjoyed dancing, traveling, church, making peach and strawberry preserves, making applesauce, strawberry picking, doing church events operation Christmas child, and food for others. They spent time at their lake house where family and friends would often visit. She enjoyed talking with her siblings on the phone, watching her daily soap operas and spending time with her family.
She was truly a remarkable woman, whose warmth, kindness, and selflessness touched the lives of everyone fortunate to know her.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years Richard Getman, her son David Getman (Michelle), daughter Lisa Whittle (Donnie), grandchildren Danny Whittle, Ashley Whittle Saunders (Andrew), Aaron Getman, Brianna Getman, Keeley Getman and great grandchildren Samuel Saunders and Rosalie Saunders. She is also survived by her two sisters Joyce Barkley and Helen Marshall and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151, US, on July 9, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Visitation will also be held at St. John's United Methodist Church, 5312 Backlick Rd, Springfield, VA 22151, US, on July 10, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am.
Interment will take place at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia , 22032, on July 10, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
