William Marshall Kennedy, Sr.
On March 11, 2018, in Springfield, Virginia. Born September 29, 1917, in Butler, Pennsylvania. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Barbara Flick Kennedy. Bill attended Penn State for two years before transferring to Allegheny College, where he met Barbara, the love of his life. He received an A.B. from Allegheny College(1941) and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University in the early '50s. A self-employed CPA, he also taught accounting at Case Western Reserve University and Baldwin Wallace College. He was active in church and civic organizations throughout his life. He enjoyed golfing, bridge and swimming. He swam regularly until he was almost 99 years old.
Bill was a World War II veteran, serving in the MPs and then the accounting office in Italy. He kept a diary of his war experiences which he self-published in 2010, Sergeant Kennedy's World War II Diary. The diary captures his lifelong enthusiasm for new experiences, and the love of his bride. Barbara and Bill shared that love and optimism for life with their growing family.
He is survived by his loving children, William M. Kennedy, Jr. (Jane) and Jean Kennedy Wheelock (Stephen), his grandchildren Judith A. Kennedy (Jonathan Osmundsen), Douglas W. Kennedy (Tara), Jennifer B. Wheelock (Dylan Cockell), Emily J. Wheelock-Davis (John A. Davis, Jr.), four great-grandchildren. and half-brothers Ralph M. Kennedy and Paul Kennedy. A memorial service will be held at Greenspring Village Chapel in Springfield on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Little River Endowment Fund, 8410 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, Virginia 22003, or Greenspring Scholar Fund, 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield 22150, or a charity of your choice.
