Obituary of William Reed Woody Jr.

William Reed Woody, Jr., long time resident of Springfield VA, departed this life on Sunday, June 26. Bill, born on Oct 30, 1928 in Anthony, KS was preceded in death by his wife, Elvira Rose and his parents William Sr. and Ethel Margret Becklenberg. He is survived by his son William Reed Woody III and his wife Susan; son Frederick Isidoro Woody and his wife Susan; daughter Francesca Anne Woody and her beau Ed Kibler; seven adoring grandchildren; brother Tom (Frederick George) and his wife Janet Woody; sister Linda and her husband Bruce Cheatum; and many cherished extended family and friends. Bill graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1951 and was an active member of the Kings Point Alumni Association and Kings Point Club of Washington. He sailed with the Merchant Marine and then served for 20 years as an officer in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1972. He was a civil servant with the U.S. Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board for 38 years. He was a long time parishioner of St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church in Springfield VA and member of the Knights of Columbus; a member of the VFW; and a participant in Burke Lake Seniors Golf Club. He was devoted to his family and friends who dearly miss his wisdom, humor, and kindness. Friends will be received Thursday, June 30 from 2:00-5:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151. His funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 1 at 10:30am at St. Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road, Springfield, VA 22152.
