Julie Marie Day (nee Kohl) entered into rest on November 16, 2016. Julia was born on April 20, 1925 in O’Fallon, MO to Frank and Sophronia Kohl. She grew up on the farm in Millwood, MO with her parents and four sisters and two brothers, Muriel, Catherine, Francis, Lela, Frank (Bud), Edward (Eddie). Lela’s twin died shortly after childbirth. Julia loved the farm, working and playing with her siblings. Many funny stories have been shared through years of their pranks and mishaps (like Julia falling through the ceiling)! When in high school, she and her older sisters worked in Kingdom City as waitresses. She also moved to Troy to be able to attend high school by babysitting for the principal in exchange for her room and board. Julia was very popular and was crowned barmwarming queen and junion/senior prom queen during her junior year at Buchanan High School.
She met her future husband, Earl Day, in high school and after graduating, married on November 23, 1944 and moved to St. Louis—first living in the city, then Jennings, Dellwood, and finally 44 years in Ferguson.
Julia was a very gifted seamstress, working at Sears teaching sewing and doing alterations. She had a long list of people she sewed for over the years until her eyesight failed. She also worked as a cafeteria head cook and camp cook for the Riverview School District and Ferguson/Florissant School District. Julia had breast cancer and a mastectomy in 1972 and upon recovering decided to do something different with her time. She went of the Board of the Christian Care Home and has served faithfully in many capacities for 44 years.
Julia enjoyed traveling around the country taking their parents, children, and grandchildren on many fun vacations. She and Earl enjoyed their trips to Hawaii, Germany, and the Caribbean, and their many excursions in their camper.
After Earl had his second stroke (leaving him bedridden) Julia was his main caregiver for the last two years of his life. They were married 61 years.
Julia loved her home, her family, and her church. She was a good daughter, sister, sister-in-law, wonderful wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma and a good friend to many. Hard-working, loving, generous are all words to describe Julia. She always made sure that those she cared about were taken care of. Julia’s sense of humor is also something that made her special. She loved to laugh and did not take herself too seriously. She described herself as a “tough old bird” and that she was!
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Halls Ferry Christian Church in Florissant from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Winfield, MO. Memorials are appreciated to the Christian Care Home or any animal rescue organization. Expressions of condolence may be offered at www.alexanderstlouis.com.
