From the perspective of a know-nothing kid down the street, it appeared to me that Audrey was always in control of her emotion and thoughts.  Looking back, I have come to better appreciate her amazing strength of character, determination, practicality and dedication to her family and friends.   Audrey seemed a pillar of wisdom, a lovely lady who could always be trusted to help one arrive at the right decision.  

Actually, this was true of both Carl Sr. and Audrey, two kind-hearted, ultra-generous, rock-solid souls:  rare, self-sacrificing, one-of-a-kind peas-in-a-pod!   For that know-nothing kid they semi-adopted, there could have been no better role models to light the way in difficult times.

We lived next door to the Stevens family during both my junior and senior high school years, and the entire Stevens family became like my extended family. Audrey Stevens, in particular, was like a second mother to me. There was always a place at their dinner table for me if I wanted it. Audrey was a kind, generous, and unpretentious soul who always had a warm smile to share with you. If I ever had a question about cooking, I knew I could always ask her, and she would provide a helpful answer without hesitation.

My friendship with the Stevens family began when I was in junior high school and continued to flourish throughout the years, enduring until the very end. Sadly, while I was not physically able to travel and see Audrey in her final days, she was always present in my thoughts and heart. Audrey, you brought so much warmth and joy into my life, and you are deeply missed by all who knew you.
