Alma “Dorothy” Harms, age 95, was translated to the Church Triumphant on May 18, 2020 surrounded by her three adoring children. She was preceded in death by her loving husband John of 57 years. Dorothy is survived by her dear children: Christina (Stevan) Raicevich, Thomas (Carrie), Paula; caring grandchildren: Stephanie, Daniel, Sarah, Nevaeh, Juan, and Reagan. Also left to cherish her memory are many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Born in Pigeon, MI, the family later moved to Utica, MI, where they started a farm and greenhouse, raising rabbits and chickens, and a large variety of vegetables. The livestock and produce were then sold at Ferndale and Eastern Markets. She worked as a secretary at the Tank Arsenal in Warren, MI, as well as Packard Motor and the GM Tech Center. After marrying John in 1960, Dorothy devoted her life to being a housewife and lovingly caring for her family. She later worked at Monteith Elementary School and for many years at Jacobson’s Department Store in the Grosse Pointe area.
Dorothy witnessed her strong faith by regularly attending church, diligently praying for others, singing many of the old-time hymns from memory, and encouraging others in their walk with the Lord. She also served as a Sunday School secretary and a member of the altar guild. She spent several years working at the Lutheran School for the Deaf in Detroit, MI, and was a long-time member of the Michigan Walther League.
Dorothy loved flowers and her garden, cooking and baking for her family, and putting many jigsaw puzzles together. For as long as she could, every Sunday morning the kitchen would be filled with the aroma of some delicious homemade baked goods. She loved making homemade applesauce and creating many of her own recipes, saying, “Don’t be afraid to throw things together.” As a testimony of her servant heart, she was always quick to lend a hand to someone in need. Though we will surely miss her, we look forward to the “Big Reunion” in heaven that she always talked about.
A private burial service will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Dorothy’s honor to the Lutheran Special Education Ministries, 30415 W 13 Mile Rd Farmington Hills MI 48334.
