Karen Marie Murphy, of Clinton Township, Michigan, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on August 15, 2025, in Lexington, Michigan. Born on March 11, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, to John and Joan Shevsky, Karen brought warmth and joy to those around her for 75 vibrant years.
Karen’s life was filled with love—love for her family, her friends, the sunshine, and the simple pleasures that made each day special. She had a deep affection for the beach and found peace in the sound of waves and the feel of sand beneath her feet. She loved listening to music and lively game nights with her sisters and grandchildren. Some of her favorite games included Skip-Bo, Skyjo, Linkee, and 25 words or less. Her creativity shone through in her many artistic pursuits; she delighted in crafting jewelry, creating whimsical yard art, and transforming beach glass into beautiful pieces. She also made sun catchers that caught the light just as she caught hearts—with brilliance and grace.
Her compassion extended to animals, especially cats. Karen's home was a haven for strays that she rescued, including her beloved Midnight, Charlie, and, most recently Squeeky, whom she welcomed with open arms. Her nurturing nature knew no bounds.
Karen was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her loving husband Joseph Petit; her cherished daughter Bridgette Sharif and Bridgette’s fiancé Zachary Straw; her precious grandchildren Xavier and Amaya Sharif, and Iris Petit; her sisters Kris Shevsky (Nancy Karlowicz), Meg Mims (Randy), Janet Chetcuti (Daniel); and brothers John Shevsky (Rosanne) and David Shevsky (Colleen); son-in-law and daughter-in-law Joe (Alyssa) Petit. Her presence will be profoundly missed by all who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Joan Shevsky; her first husband Frank Murphy; and her daughter Megan Murphy.
Karen looked forward each year to traveling with Joe to Antigua—a tradition that reflected their shared love of adventure and togetherness. This February trip was already on their hearts as they planned another escape to the island paradise she adored.
Those who knew Karen remember her as someone who loved with her whole heart. She gave unconditionally of herself, accepted everyone with kindness, and expressed gratitude for every person who touched her life. Her conversations often ended with a signature phrase that captured the essence of who she was: “Luv, luv.”
May Karen’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her—and may we all carry forward a bit of the sunshine she so freely shared.
A memorial gathering celebrating Karen’s life will be held on November 15th, 2025, from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm, with a service at 6:00 pm, at Kaul Funeral Home 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, Michigan 48081.
