Loretta Marie Reiche made everyone around her feel welcome. Boisterous, quick-witted, and always eager to serve up enormous portions of homemade food—especially Polish dishes such as city chicken, homemade kielbasa, potato dumpling with bacon and homemade cheesecake for dessert. Loretta excelled at being both fiercely independent and a binding force for her family.
Loretta worked in Detroit as a social worker for the State of Michigan for 12 years, where she made many lifelong friends, and she loved spending summer days at the family cabin in Kalkaska. She was an avid crafter—with particular skills in sewing and crocheting—and had a deep love for holidays, especially Christmas, when she spent hours setting up her ever-growing Christmas village. Above all, she loved her family and took immense joy in spoiling her granddaughters and great granddaughters.
Loretta passed away while surrounded by family on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at ShorePointe Nursing Center in St. Clair Shores at age 91. She was born Dec. 2, 1928 in Detroit. She is survived by her daughter Valerie (Leonard) Steinhauser; granddaughters Abbey (Matthew) Jordan and Ashley Steinhauser; great granddaughters Eleanor and Emersyn Jordan; siblings Monica Sienkiewicz, Paul (Linda) Sienkiewicz, Timothy (Nadine) Sienkiewicz and Dennis (Karen) Sienkiewicz along with many nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 14 years, George, loving son John, dear sister Barbara, and dear brother Harry.
In keeping with Loretta’s wishes, cremation will take place; a Memorial Mass is to be scheduled at a later date.
