Richard retired from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) as a Patrol SGT in 2013 having served proudly for 36 years. During his career, he became one of the first D.A.R.E. Instructors in Michigan, spent three years undercover with the Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement (SANE) team, served as Undersheriff, was a member of the CCSD Dive team, motorcycle patrol and participated in the Hurricane Task Force Katrina.
Richard made his home in Harrison Township, Michigan, although a piece his heart never left Cheboygan, the community he loved for so many years. He was happiest outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or trapping, but nothing compared to the joy he found in the people he loved.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 51 years, Juanita, who was the love and constant companion of his life. He is forever cherished by his two sons, whom he was immensely proud of, Jeremy (Michelle) Miller and Jason (Jeff Kramer) Miller, who carry forward his strength, his humor, and his heart.
Family meant everything to him. Time together with them wasn’t just precious…it was his purpose, and being a grandfather to Emma and Christopher brightened his world and filled his life with pride, love, and pure joy. He poured love into creating simple family traditions like making maple syrup and mead, creating memories that his family will cherish for generations.
Richard is also fondly remembered by his sister, Debra Edmonds, along with several nieces and nephews who will deeply miss his presence. He now finds peace in the company of those who passed before him, including his parents, Virginia Wable and Richard Miller, his sister, Judy Martin, and his brother, Timothy A. Miller.
Taken from us far too early, Richard’s absence will be profoundly felt, but his love, laughter, and kind spirit will remain with his family and friends always.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm, with a memorial service at 5:00 pm, at Kaul Funeral Home 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, Michigan 48081.
