Steven was a committed member of the Detroit Police Department, serving the community with distinction. He served the community with honor and integrity for 40 years. He found that over the years, his dedicated coworkers and lifelong childhood friends ultimately became the chosen siblings that formed his true family.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of the outdoors, such as hunting and fishing. His appreciation for hobbies extended to his love for Lionel trains, a company he even worked for at one point. He also enjoyed estate sales and collecting unique treasures.
Beyond his career, Steven's greatest joy was his family. Loving father of Steven Earl (Amie Lynn) Schmekel and Emily Mae (Iain David) Robertson. Proud grandfather of Zoe Schmekel and Steven Allen Schmekel. He was predeceased by his parents, Marvin Schmekel and Rosella Schmekel. He will also be missed by his fur babies, his dogs Sally and Buddy and his cat, JJ.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025 from 12PM until 4PM with a Service at 3PM at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI. Please share a memory with the family on Steven’s online guestbook.
