

Born in Oakland to John and Mary Curtin on February 3, 1947, he attended St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley. After graduation, he joined the Army as a Medic.
David graduated from Sacramento State College BA in Public Administration in 1970. In addition, he holds a lifetime teaching credential (Community college Level) from U.C. Davis
David had his introduction to his future career as a Reserve Officer with the Concord Police Department while attending college. His career in Law Enforcement officially began when he joined the Lincoln Police Department in 1972. The family relocated to St. Helena when he joined the St. Helena Police Department in 1977.
In 1982 he became the first “Officer of the Year” as the St. Helena Chamber of Commerce established a new annual award. The St. Helena Chamber of Commerce awarded him Officer of the Year again in 1990. In 1991, he received the Outstanding Law Officer Award from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9472 and Post 1146. Also in 1991, he was honored as the county’s public safety officer by the Napa Chamber of Commerce. In 1999 he was again awarded Public Safety Officer of the Year by Napa Chamber of Commerce.
David was a dedicated member of the American Legion for 33 years. He was also a member of the Napa County Peace Officers Association, the Native Sons of the Golden West, and International Police Association. As a member of the International Police Association, David hosted numerous European and South African Police Officers and their families visiting the Napa Valley.
After his retirement in 2001, David continued his spirit of community involvement. He enjoyed cooking and delivered meals to friends and was proud to provide security at Justin Sienna football games for several years. Many that he came to know through his work, his associations and his volunteer efforts will remember him as a great friend and mentor.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan; his daughter Shayna (Dave), and son Calen (Regina); grandchildren, Sean, Cooper, Ethan, and Kaitlynn. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Kathy Curtin and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a true family man that spoke of his family with visible love and pride.
A Celebration of David’s life will be held at the Native Sons Hall in St. Helena on July 19, 2014 from noon until 3pm. and will be preceded by Inurnment at the American Legion Plot at St. Helena Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
