Phil was a lifelong resident of the valley, born March 16, 1920. The son of the late Lorenzo and Emuah Penland, Phil moved to his property in Oakville when he was 7 years old and remained until his death on December 8, 2011. He was 91 years old! His wife of 66 years, Shirley (Hurd) Penland and his two daughters, Phylis Penalnd Anderson and Susan Penland Shorey were with him. Phil is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Tia, Erin, Jessica, Andrew, Matthew, and Adam, as well as 5 great-grandchildren; Kaila, Blake, Mason, Christian, and Sarah. Phil attended school in the one room Yount School on the Silverado Trail, then walked through the vineyards to the Oakville School House. He graduated from Napa High in 1938. He honorably served in WWII in both the European and Pacific Theaters and participated in the invasion of Sicily and Italy on LST 378. Prior to retirement, he worked in Rutherford for 33 years as foreman at Lincoln Ford Implement Company and then Wilcox Tractor Company. Services will be held Monday, December 12, 2011 at Morrison Funeral Chapel in St. Helena at 12:00 Noon. Friends and family are invited.
