Eleanor Jean Grant Tombs

Eleanor Jean Grant Tombs (1921-2012) has passed away at the age of 90, after several months of illness. Born in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of the Rev. Frederick C. Grant and Helen Hardie, she took a degree at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts before becoming head of the French and Spanish desk at the OSS (US military intelligence) during the Second World War. A war bride, she married Laurence C. Tombs of Montreal, in September 1945 – they had 47 wonderfully adventurous years together.

Jean died as she lived, with dignity and courage. She was a woman of great intelligence and generosity. She will be sorely missed by her brother and sister-in-law Bob and Peggy Grant of Chicago; by her daughter Cathie (Robert Kahan); by her son Guy (Suzanne Ozorak); by her son Bob (Susan Ross); by her son George (Marie Frenette); by her grandson Alex Somma (Isabelle Plante) and their son Malcolm; by her other grandchildren: Gabriel Somma, Stephanie, Angelica, Frederick, Sylvia and Marissa Tombs, and Eleonore, Iona (Adam Shamash), Myriam and Nathanael Fournier-Tombs.

After a life of remarkable actions motivated by love, devotion and respect, her example will long be remembered. She was truly blessed, and her family, friends and community are blessed for having known her. Now that she has been called back to God, may she rest in peace. Our profound gratitude to the neurological and palliative care units at the Hôpital Charles-Lemoyne in Greenfield Park for their outstanding and loving healthcare during her final days.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, October 4th between 7pm and 9pm at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White funeral home, 307 Riverside, St. Lambert (approach via Desaulniers Blvd. and Argyle Ave.). A funeral liturgy with Eucharist will be celebrated on Friday, October 5th at 11am, at St. Barnabas Church, 95 Lorne Ave., St. Lambert. After a reception for family and friends in the parish hall, the burial will take place at Mt. Royal Cemetery.

Grant (un prêtre épiscopalien) et de Helen Hardie, elle a obtenu un baccalauréat au Collège Smith à Northampton, dans le Massachussetts, avant de devenir, pendant la Deuxième guerre mondiale, chef du bureau d’analyse pour les pays francophones et hispanophones à l’OSS (aux renseignements militaires américains). En septembre 1945, elle a épousé Laurence C. Tombs, de Montréal, avec qui elle a vécu 47 années merveilleuses.

Jean nous a quittés comme elle a vécu, avec dignité et courage. C’était une femme d’une grande intelligence et générosité. Elle laisse dans le deuil son frère et sa belle-sœur Bob et Peggy Grant de Chicago, sa fille Cathie (Robert Kahan), son fils Guy (Suzanne Ozorak), son fils Bob (Susan Ross), son fils George (Marie Frenette), son petit-fils Alex Somma (Isabelle Plante) et leur fils Malcolm, et ses autres petits-enfants : Gabriel Somma, Stephanie, Angelica, Frederick, Sylvia et Marissa Tombs, et Eleonore, Iona (Adam Shamash), Myriam et Nathanael Fournier-Tombs.

Sa vie a été définie par des gestes d’amour, de dévouement et de respect. Rappelée à Dieu, qu’elle repose en paix. Nous voulons exprimer notre profonde gratitude aux unités de soins neurologiques et palliatifs à l’hôpital Charles-Lemoyne à Greenfield Park pour leur excellente et délicate attention durant ses derniers jours.

La visite au salon funéraire Collins Clarke MacGillivray White aura lieu le jeudi 4 octobre de 19:00 à 21:00 au 307 Riverside, à Saint-Lambert (se diriger au salon par le boulevard Desaulniers et l’avenue Argyle). La messe funéraire aura lieu le vendredi 5 octobre à 11:00 à l’église Saint-Barnabas au 95 avenue Lorne à Saint-Lambert, suivie d’une réception dans la salle paroissiale. L’enterrement aura ensuite lieu au Cimetière Mont-Royal.
