Jørgen Arvid Madsen

In his 97th year, Jørgen died peacefully on October 27th of the effects of a stroke. He is survived by Ketty, his wife of 68 years, and their five children: Kirsten (Glen), Remo (JoAnn), Eric (Kirsten), Glenn (Cindy) and Andrew. Also left to mourn are fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as four nieces and nephews.

The fourth (and last survivor) of five children, Jørgen was born in Ronde, Denmark in 1918 at the height of the Spanish Flu. He lived through the tumultuous changes of the 20th Century: the upheavals of depression and World War II, the prosperity and social evolution of the postwar era and, throughout his life, unprecedented technological progress. Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a watchmaker in Denmark, later perfecting his skills in Switzerland before coming to Montreal with his new bride in 1948. In the 50’s and 60’s he worked in fine mechanics building gyroscopes and navigational instruments for aerospace, aviation and the navy at Sperry Rand Corporation. Then he joined Heinemann Electric Canada - D.T Shaw Company as production manager until his retirement in 1993. He loved this job. More than twenty years later he is still remembered daily at Heinemann Electric with respect and gratitude.

Throughout Jørgen held true to his values and strived to make life better for himself as well as for others. During the war he resisted the Nazi occupiers of his homeland and helped Jews escape the Holocaust. He created beauty wherever he could, especially in his gardening, jewelry making and photography. Listening to music, traveling, reading and story telling were among his favorite activities. Jørgen was devoted to his family. He loved visiting with his grandchildren who fondly remember his lively sense of humor and delight in simple pleasures. He was a much loved man. We will miss him.

The funeral is on Saturday November 7 starting with visitation at 10 am at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home (307 Riverside Drive, Saint-Lambert), followed by Interment of the ashes at 11:30 am at the Saint-Lambert Cemetery (corner of Riverside and Maple). We return to the funeral home for a celebration of Jørgen’s life at 12 pm after which there will be a reception.

Le 27 octobre dernier, Jørgen est décédé paisiblement des suites dʼun AVC. Il allait avoir 97 ans. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse depuis 68 ans, Ketty, et leurs cinq enfants, Kirsten (Glen), Remo (JoAnn), Eric (Kirsten), Glenn (Cindy) et Andrew, ainsi que quatorze petits-enfants, quatre arrière-petits-enfants et quatre neveux et nièces.

Quatrième (et dernier survivant) de cinq enfants, Jørgen est né en 1918 à Ronde, au Danemark, au plus fort de lʼépidémie de grippe espagnole. Il a vécu les grands bouleversements du 20e siècle : la Grande Crise, la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis la prospérité et lʼévolution sociale de lʼaprès-guerre. Toute cette période a été marquée par des progrès technologiques sans précédent. Suivant les traces de son père, Jørgen a dʼabord été horloger au Danemark. En 1948, après un séjour de perfectionnement en Suisse, il est venu à Montréal avec la femme quʼil venait dʼépouser. Au cours des années 1950 et 1960, il a travaillé en mécanique de précision pour la société Sperry Rand, fabriquant des gyroscopes et des instruments de navigation pour la marine, lʼaviation et lʼaérospatiale. Il a ensuite été directeur de la production chez Heinemann Electric Canada - D.T. Shaw, jusquʼà sa retraite en 1993. Jørgen Madsen adorait son travail. Après plus de vingt ans, ses collègues de la Heinemann Electric se rappellent de lui avec respect et gratitude.

Jørgen a toujours été fidèle à ses valeurs et a constamment cherché à améliorer ses conditions de vie et celles de ses semblables. Pendant lʼoccupation nazie de sa patrie, il participé à la résistance danoise et au sauvetage des Juifs. Jørgen saisissait chaque occasion de créer de la beauté, entre autres par le jardinage, la joaillerie et la photographie. Il aimait beaucoup lire, voyager, écouter de la musique et raconter de belles histoires. Dévoué à sa famille, il adorait rendre visite à ses petits-enfants, qui se rappellent affectueusement de son vif sens de lʼhumour et de son goût pour les plaisirs simples. Cʼétait un homme aimé de tous. Il nous manquera beaucoup.

La famille souhaite remercier les employées et employés de lʼhôpital Pierre-Boucher, pour leur empressement et leur gentillesse.

Le samedi 7 novembre 2015, la famille recevra les condoléances à compter de 10 h, au salon funéraire Collins Clarke MacGillivray White (307, rue Riverside, Saint-Lambert), puis les cendres seront inhumées à 11 h 30 au cimetière de Saint-Lambert (coin Riverside et Maple). Nous retournerons au salon funéraire à 12 h, pour une commémoration de la vie de Jørgen. Cet hommage sera suivi dʼune réception.
