Born Sylvia McCue on 29 August 1935, in London, UK, daughter of Doris and Francis McCue (dec’d), is predeceased by her four brothers, Dennis, Frank, Allan, and John.
Beginning with her premature birth, along with her dear twin brother Frank, Sylvia resolutely faced challenges and upheaval from an early age. As a young girl she stoically endured her wartime evacuation from London, a trying time apart from her parents and siblings. Once reunited with her family, the only daughter in a sibling group of five, Sylvia determinedly learnt to stand firm in her convictions and make her voice heard, and developed an indomitable spirit belied by her delicate stature. She grew to be a warmhearted young woman of faith with a true moral compass, a staunch advocacy of animals, and a fond enjoyment of dancing.
A fledgling friendship at a social dance club led to Sylvia’s introduction to her doting husband of 67 years, Edward (Ted) Farrant. Married 29 May 1958, she and Ted then embarked on the bravest adventure of their young lives by crossing the Atlantic to set down the roots of their lasting love story in Montreal. A handful of years thereafter, following the birth of their first son, Marc, they moved their young family to a newly built home on Montreal’s South Shore where Sylvia forged deep ties with the community through volunteer work and fast, enduring friendships.
After the birth of her second son, Keith; and the adoption of her daughter, Tracy Rose, Sylvia deservedly took enormous pride in her many roles as a mum of three working within the home – bookkeeper, caregiver, chauffeur, cook, dog trainer, gardener, hockey mum, housekeeper, interior designer, peacekeeper, and countless more. With creative and tireless efforts, she fostered a warm and nurturing home for her husband, Ted, and children. A beautifully tended garden, home baked cakes on birthdays, Sunday evening family dinners, and Christmastime treats of mincemeat pies and bowlfuls of Smarties were but a few of the cherished staples of her home, most fondly remembered by her family.
Sylvia found great joy and comfort in her faith, family, and friends alike. She touched so many lives with her tender heart, kindness and compassion. Hers was the ever-ready helping hand to those beset by the hardships of ailing health and advancing age. A true and dear friend to many.
Sylvia lives on in the loving memories of her surviving husband Ted, her children Marc, Keith and Tracy Rose, her seven grandchildren, Meghan, Christopher, Sarah, Michael, Matthew, Mitchell and Katelyne and her three great-grandchildren, Rayan, Ava, and James.
A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held on Saturday, 25 October 2025 at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 307 Riverside Drive, Saint Lambert J4P 2H7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SPCA Montérégie, a cause close to her heart.
