Beloved husband of the late Beverly (Feldman) Kraus; dear father and father-in-law of the late Bryan Kraus and Carolyn Grove (David); loving grandfather of Trevor Kraus, Connor Kraus, Ashton Grove, Jadon Grove; beloved father-in-law of the late Karen (Mueller) Kraus; dear son of the late Joseph and late Cele (Silverman) Kraus; dear brother and brother-in-law of the late Jerome Kraus (Linda), Michael Kraus (Kathy) and the late Eunice (the late Jack) Levy; dear brother-in-law of Rosalie Franklin (the late Sidney); special friend to Kyran and family; treasured uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
Alan was the oldest of four children, born in St. Louis to Joseph and Cele Kraus. The family lived in St. Louis and University City. There he cultivated wonderful friendships, beginning in grade school and continuing through high school and college at Washington University.
The Kraus children were all musical - playing instruments or dancing. Alan focused on the trumpet, playing in high school, college, and the Army band, and later teaching it.
He taught English for 30 years, beginning at Clayton High School, and moved on to many years at St. Louis Community College. After retiring, he spent time reading, playing handball, gin, and poker, and enjoying his grandchildren.
It was during college that he met and fell in love with Beverly. They married in 1959 and were together for 50 years. Bev's and Alan’s personalities truly complemented one another throughout their lives, building their family and careers, and sharing many special times with their close friends and family. Sadly, Bev passed away in 2009.
Alan was a dedicated and loving father to Bryan (who passed in 2011) and Carolyn, encouraging and supporting their wide-ranging interests. And his oft-mentioned challenged sense of direction somehow didn't stop him from transporting them to (and back from) local and long-distance excursions.
Alan's second home was the JCC (the “J”) —more specifically, the Men's Health Club—
where he spent a lot of time exercising, playing cards, enjoying his existing friendships and building new ones. You could also often find him at the St. Louis County Library, selecting books after pouring over the latest reviews.
In addition to his love of reading, he also had a love of music, Broadway theater, movies, and yoga. He loved learning and having deep discussions with his friends and family. Alan was known for bringing humor into even the most serious of subjects.
Alan will be remembered for so many reasons, but especially for his love of and commitment to his family, the treasured friendships he had throughout his life, and his genuine and mindful presence.
Funeral service and burial were held on Friday, November 14. Please see below to view a video of the funeral service.
Memorial contributions preferred to JCC of St. Louis, Men's Health Club, 2 Millstone Campus Dr., St. Louis, MO 63146.
