Loving and beloved wife of 70 years to the late Charles Goldman; dear mother of William Goldman (Virginia Miller) and Robin Netherton (Dana Netherton); grandmother of Rachel Goldman (Melanie Gersten), Lily Netherton, and Rinn Netherton; great-grandmother of Charlotte Goldman; aunt, cousin, and friend to many.
Charney was raised in the Catskills town of South Fallsburg, N.Y., and then in Brooklyn. She attended Hunter College in New York City, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with an art major in 1950. She married Charles Goldman that same year, and they lived and worked in Ohio, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania before settling in St. Louis County in 1962. Charney worked as an artist while raising her children, and in 1974 she opened the Frame Guild Gallery in Kirkwood (with later locations in Des Peres, St. Peters, and Creve Coeur). She closed the business in 2002, and she and Charles enjoyed an active retirement that included multiple trips to Europe. In 2019, Charney and Charles moved from their home in Ballwin to the Willows in Chesterfield, where Charles passed in 2020 and Charney spent her remaining years enjoying company, movies, music, and museum outings.
A private graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the St. Louis Art Museum or the ACLU.
