To the family of Elizabeth Brown,
Elizabeth started working for College Guild, the organization I founded, when she was at Bowdoin. CG is a non-profit offering free correspondence courses to prisoners. She became a leader of the on-campus College Guild Club, recruiting and orienting other students so they could help prisoners learn.
Often I don't meet Bowdoin volunteers, but as the contact for club leaders, I had many opportunities to see Elizabeth. She was always full of energy and enthusiasm, willing to help our organization in any way she could. Best of all, she continued to work with us after graduation. Every time I paired her with a prisoner, I could remember her face and spirit and it made me smile.
Elizabeth's Bowdoin friend Claudia was also a College Guild volunteer, but did not continue after college. She has contacted us and wants to start working with prisoners again in Elizabeth's honor.
It's typical of Elizabeth that she wanted to reach out to the most disenfranchised members of society and share the light of learning with them. The obituary says that she wanted to make the world a better place. She did!
I'm so sorry your family has lost such a treasure,
Julie Zimmerman, College Guild

Dear Cathy and Dave,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your wonderful daughter Elizabeth. I only had her in one class at Bowdoin, Ornithology, but it was more than enough time to realize what a very special person she was. Did I ever see her without an enthusiastic and joyful smile? I don't think so.

She was a great friend to the other students in the class — Claudia, Hannah, Shan, Erin, Sara, everyone loved her. I remember her excitedly sharing the list of birds that she had seen in Belize over spring break. At the end of the semester, she baked me cookies (warning me that they contained walnuts!) and wrote a sweet note. She left far too soon but she left a lot of enduring memories.

With best wishes to you and your family,
Nat Wheelwright

Cathy, Dave, and Emily,

Our hearts truly are with you. We both know that no words will ever be able to express your pain and sorrow, We understand that.
Aliza has such great memories of dancing with Elizabeth, and I remember all of the years of our girls' growing up together in preschool and at Spoede together. I fondly remember how kind, caring, and thoughtful Elizabeth always was to both of my girls.
Please know, we will be here to support you in any way that we can, as we do really know what you are going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Warmly,
Roberta and Aliza Gartenberg

We, at Bowdoin, are so sorry to hear of your loss. Elizabeth was a lovely student, and passionate about the environmental science course she took with me. She especially loved the outdoor labs! I would like to share my deepest sympathy, and I hope you know my thoughts are with you all in your loss.
