Eugene “Gene” aka, “Red” Neuwirth passed peacefully into the hands of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday January 3, 2014. He will be reunited in heaven with his wife, Willa Jane (nee Alie, 1928 – 2009). Beloved father of Perri (Wayne) Cagle, Lynn (Greg) Doughman, Mark (Kathleen) Neuwirth, Matthew (Janice) Neuwirth and Beth Neuwirth. Loving Grandpa to Mary Guthrie (nee Neuwirth), Michael and Gregory Neuwirth, Claire and Nash Doughman and Ellen Cagle. Further survived by his sister, Mary (Doug) Hennessy.
Raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, Gene earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Fordham University in 1951, and through the Army ROTC program, served his nation for two years as an Artillery Officer during the Korean War, seeing action in Pusan, South Korea. He met his wife of 57 years while stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Following his discharge from the Army, Gene worked briefly at the Rocky Mountain Chemical Weapons Arsenal in Denver, before joining Shell Chemical as a chemist and retiring as a National Sales Executive after 38 years of service.
Gene was a 37 year parishioner of St. Anselm at Priory Parish and most recently Sacred Heart of Valley Park. He had a life-long enjoyment of golf and was a 43 year member at Glen Echo Country Club, Normandy, where he served on the Board of Governors’ for 1985-89. Post retirement, Gene remained active in the community in roles such as, Certified USGA Golf Marshall, Board of Directors’ Cardinal Ritter Institute, United Way Panel Member and Pebble Acres Trustee for two terms with 15 years of volunteering to his neighborhood.
Gene and Willa moved to Meramec Bluffs Senior Living Community in 2007 where both were active with their new circle of friends, especially at the numerous bridge and gin rummy groups where Gene could continue with his card-playing skills.
SERVICES: Visitation Friday, January 10th, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at Kriegshauser West Mortuary, 9450 Olive Boulevard, Saint Louis, Missouri 63132. Funeral Mass Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anselm Catholic Church, 530 South Mason Rd, Creve Coeur, Missouri, 63141. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Catholic Charities Archdiocese of St. Louis would be appreciated.
