Dear Jim,

I was a friend of Cole's at Loyola University in New Orleans. Man, what a bright and memorable guy he was. So full of life and looking for plans and new friends. Never a bore, and always bringing people together for fun in the city, such as going to see one of the many newly discovered music groups he would find and share with us.

Cole was a great young man and I hope you celebrate his happy life just as he celebrated his every day. Surround yourself with close friends and family and know that we are all praying and thinking about your family. Be strong, never give up, and surround yourself with activity and close friends and family.

Sometimes, words fail. My group and I all loved Cole for his creativity, imagination and gentle way. I can only imagine the loss of a child, something we as parents can't begin to fathom. Please know that you are not alone in your grief, Cole was a special young man who will be oh so sorely, sorely, sorely missed. The Wider crew feels grateful for having known your/our Cole.   Please know we wish you peace, calm, quiet and love. Storming the heavens sweet ones.

Oh Cole..it's taken me a while to even be able to write this. My pain is great, my heart is heavy and my tears are frequent. You were so close to  my son Kiger and consequently to me. You were both like a son and a friend and my heart aches for you each day. And while I know your transition has taken you to a better place, I can't help but wish you were here with me now. Watch over us all. Keep us safe and give us peace. My deepest condolences to your parents and family to have suffered such a loss at such a young age. We are supposed to die before our children; there is no greater pain. I am so, so sorry. Thank you Cole for giving me the gift of knowing you; may you sit with God in happiness and finally be free. I love you.

we were all devastated to hear of the tragic death of cole.  it is truly the worst thing that can every happen to a parent. my son, billy, told me of Cole's death this morning during an AA meeting that I was attending with him.  I met you at a parents' seminar at Aspiro; we sat at meals together.I was struck by the ease of your relationship.  I have heard of Cole over the years from Billy. I'm so sorry that I didn't get to the funeral.. I was so torn up that I couldn't even leave my bed. To his parents: Sam, I only had the chance of meeting you once, but you seemed like a lovely woman. And from what I know about you, you were one heck of a mother for Cole. You have my deepest condolences. And Jim, some of the greatest lessons that I'll ever learn, I did from Cole; and he did from you, so you will forever have my respect. My condolences to you as well. Oh Sam and Jim, I don't even know where to begin.  Tom and I got home late tonight from NYC where we attended young John Hubert's wedding.  Sam, many of your JLSL friends were there, which means we all missed the service for Cole.  We should have been there for you.
I remember vividly visiting you in the hospital before Cole was born.  You were such a sport about the bed rest and so strong and accepting of your role as an "about to be" mother. 
Every child is a blessing, but the most special of those only stay with us a short while.  They accomplish their mission in one quarter of the time that it takes the rest of us.
