With great love and deep sadness, we announce the passing of Joan Birnbaum Seltzer. Joan was the adored wife of the late Harry Seltzer and a loving mother to Garry (Cynthia) Seltzer, Jill (Mark) Schupp and Joy (Wayne Hoffman) Seltzer. She was a proud grandma to Courtney, Michael (Valerie), Kevin (Erin), Blake (Kaleigh), Brandon (Kaylee), Alex (Mallory), Joey (Alex), Samantha (Shawn) and Jordan (Jess), proud great grandma to Charlie, Millie, Teddy, Samson, Carter, Emery, Sophie, Cecilia, Luke, Riley, Wade, Clarke, and Maya.
She was the daughter of the late Helen and the late Benjamin Birnbaum, sister and sister-in-law to the late Harriet (the late Spiro) Abatgis, the late Lynn (the late Martin) Kopolow and the late Jerry Birnbaum, the late Dorothy (the late Ben) Tish, and the late Sidney (the late Minnette) Maltzman. She was a beloved aunt, cousin, and friend to many.
Joan’s creativity, intelligence, and talents were seemingly limitless. Throughout her life, she was able to make use of her gifts in her many vocations and avocations including but not limited to: audiologist, cable tv host, author, artist, radio show host, voice-over announcer, professional contester, temple performer and investment maven. She was also compassionate and generous, volunteering as a tutor for school children, serving meals to older adults and supporting important causes she believed in, including starting a fund specifically designed to help women in need.
She was an outgoing, interesting, and interested woman, who enjoyed theater, travel, friends, and family. She enjoyed hosting parties and created many family traditions that will live on for generations.
Our family offers our deepest gratitude to her caregivers, particularly April, Susan and Carolyn, whose love and dedication extended Joan’s purpose and life. We thank you with all of our hearts.
Rest in peace, Mom. We will miss you and love you forever.
Visitation Sunday, August 2, 10 am at Congregation Shaare Emeth, 11645 Ladue Road, Funeral Service follows at 10:30 am (Also available via livestream). Interment to follow at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery, 650 White Road. Shiva will be at the Joy Seltzer/Wayne Hoffman residence, Sunday from 1:30 – 4:30 PM, Monday and Tuesday from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.
Memorial contributions preferred to the Joan and Harry Seltzer Fund for Improving Womens Lives at Congregation Shaare Emeth or the Alzheimer’s Association.
