Beloved father of Joan (Bill Cylkowski) Mattingly, John (Kathy) Mattingly, Margaret (Gregory) Kaduchak, and Christine Mattingly.
Dear Grandfather to David Cylkowski (Lauren Lefebvre); Destin (Chris) Wintz; John, Gwen, Nick and Jillian Mattingly; and Jasmine Kaduchak. Great grandfather to Cooper and Collen Wintz.
Survived by his brother Mark Mattingly, sister-in-law Betty Mattingly, the children and sister of his long time companion, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was predeceased by Angela Gravina, his long time companion and friend, his parents, William and Beatrice Mattingly, and 12 siblings: Louise (John) Barton, Anastasia (Albert) Broderick, Frances (James) Henning, Veronica (Edward) Houska, Jean (John) McCormac, William (Mary 1948-86 and Pat 1990-2009), Robert, James (Kathy), Thomas Jerome, Betty Jean, Janice and Sister Doris Marie Mattingly.
John was a structural engineer and steel deck industry expert who contributed heavily to national building codes and standards during his 60 years in the industry.
He was a devout and faithful Catholic and served his long time Church of the Assumption in New Jersey as the chairman of multiple committees.
He was an avid sports fan, but was most passionate about watching football and loved a good game better than any one team.
He valued his long term relationships with his fellow St. Mary’s High School alumni, attending his 65th class reunion in August of 2025.
Visitation will be at Hoffmeister South County Chapel,1515 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, MO 63125 on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 5-8 p.m.
Funeral Mass at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, 4900 Ringer Road, St Louis, MO 63129 will be on October 10, 2026, at 10 am.
Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 6901 MacKenzie Road, St. Louis MO 63123
The family would like to thank Karen Gravina and Ron Nirenberg (daughter and son-in-law of Angela Gravina) for being so generous with their time taking care of our father while he was still in New Jersey. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent care provided by the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Barnes Hospital oncology floor, Washington University physicians, and the Siteman Cancer Center.
