John was born in Terenure, Dublin, Ireland to Edward and Dorothy Tully. The family moved to Manchester, England when he was 9, where he later attended De La Salle College. He was a brilliant student, excelling in maths, and mastering his favorite game of chess.
He started as a chemical engineer in England and France, which led to a transfer to Stamford, Connecticut, in 1967. He eventually joined Monsanto in St. Louis, Missouri, spending the rest of his career there. His former colleagues still describe him as a “Legend”.
His work led him to travel the world. His wit, warmth, generosity, love of song and laughter endeared him to all who knew him, and he made many friends around the globe. He was always calling and visiting his large extended family whom he dearly loved. He sang for decades in the Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic church choir and the Gentlemen of Sound Barbershop Chorus. He was especially proud of his Irish heritage. Every March John would be found celebrating St. Patrick’s “season” singing with his beloved barbershop friends who hosted charity corned beef and cabbage dinners, and raising a pint of Guiness to toast "Sláinte!”.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Gaynell (nee Johnson), sister Patricia Maloney, son Michael (Kathleen) Tully, daughter D. Anne Mestres, and step-son Mitchell (Pamela) Richmond. Beloved grandfather, great grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, great uncle and great great uncle.
The funeral mass for John will be held Monday, August 4, 2025 at 4:00 PM at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, 401 S Lindbergh Blvd, Frontenac, MO 63131.
