Dr. Selke was my cardiologist. I feel he saved my life with an emergency heart stint after I was rushed by ambulance. One of my later visits, with additional stints, his nurse told me to tease him and tell him Greenville Illinois was named after my great grandfather, since my name is Greene lol.  (He drilled holes in the ice and fished there sometimes). He seemed surprised and said "really".  I then said I was kidding. He looks over his glasses and says "you do know I'm the one putting in your stint.) The nurse and I both laughed. He was a GREAT doctor.

 I am so sorry for your great loss. I had no idea,till I decided to look up an old friend only last week. I was shocked and have been in total disbelief since then. I will always remember Ken as a man who did things his way. A successful pilot ,Cardiologist, Basketball player, a great family man  ,an adventurer, risk taker and a great friend.  A man of strong character  who went about life fearlessly. I have always admired his great insight and the way he lived life with absolutely no fear.

Dear Dr. Anita Chacko, Zach, Deeya, Jedediah; Ron and Sharolyn, 
Upon opening yesterday's mail I was in disbelief that the "Lion" is gone.  In the late 80's, I had a "Stress Test" at the Old St. Lukes on Delmar and CODED. In the Emergency room this tall doctor comes in, "Mrs. Konersmann?"  I looked at him and said "Your people came from Germany."  He nodded.  Again I said, "Your people are Evangelical."  Again he nodded...I went on, "Your family lived in Indiana."  and he says "My family LIVES in Indiana." then asks...what my profession was...Dr. Ken and I share a 3rd Great grandfather.  My grandmother had died in Germany and grandfather remarried, Dr. Ken's 3rd great grandmother.  Dr. Ken arranged to have his grandmother send me a family tree book.  He also inserted several pacemakers for me.  One visit I gave him a framed "Selken" copied from the family home in Germany.  He was 1 year and 3 days younger than I.  I thought someday he would retire and I would have to find another cardiologist as compassionate and caring as he.  I never thought this would be.  I am so sorry for you loss. Let Perpetual Light Shine upon him.  I am so sorry.

About a year ago I told him that I felt that through his care he had extended my life.  He quietly answered with a "Thank you."  I could see he was touched by the expression on his face. 

I will certainly miss Dr. Selke. He saved my life a couple of times. We had great stories to share about old tractors and basketball. I drove 80 miles to see him every 6 months. My deepest condolences to the whole family.

June 2, 1991 ... this is the day that God blessed me by introducing me to Dr. Kenneth Selke - at St. Luke's cardiac catheterization room. I had just found out that I had suffered a massive heart attack at the ripe ol' age of 42. Dr. Selke cleaned-out my heart, and asked me if I was ever going to smoke again; I promised that my last cigarette that day was my last in life. I have kept my promise all these years ... and Ken kept his commitment of being my cardiologist all of these years. But he was not just my heart doctor - he made me feel like a dear friend each time we met. He would ask about my wife and daughter ... and it was sincere (not just "small talk"). Ken saved my life that day, and we have remained patient / doctor and friends ever since. Often, people come and go in life without making an impact - but this is not true of Ken. I actually enjoyed my visits with him - even thought he put me on a high-protocol stress test, and how I would sweat for him. But more than anything, I feel blessed by God that He brought me to Dr. Selke. I will SORELY miss him ... but I now am praying for him, that God take him into his arms and hold him dearly. Ken's earthly journey is over, but a new one is just beginning ... and I'm sure that someday our paths again will be joined. I was shocked and saddened when the news arrived ... and now I'm supplicating that He give strength to Ken's wife and family. Please accept my sincerest condolences, and my prayers for everyone he has touched. Ken lives on ... in all of the hearts and minds of the numerous, wonderful people who have been blessed to be part of Ken's life in some manner. Now, rest in peace my friend ... and keep a stress-test appointment for me in heaven (I beat the five-year after attack life expectancy !!).

To the Selke family, my heart goes out to all of you during this difficult time. Dr Selke was always kind, caring, and would always make the time to go out of his way to be helpful. He was a source of wisdom and guidance and his friendship will be missed. He had a great sense of humor and truly took the time to get to know people.  He always talked highly about his family every time we spoke for work. He was so proud of his children and would give me the updates often. Deeya, my heart goes out to you. Ken and I were classmates at Manipal and he was a good friend. He was kind ,gentle,soft spoken and friendly. He loved to get to know people and their cultures and once while visiting our home insisted on eating his meal using his fingers to the delight of grandmother. I was so very sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Chacko' s husband, Doctor Ken Selke.My deepest sympathy is extended to the entire family. He was loved and respected by many, and will be remembered fondly.

Our heart felt sympathy to the Selke Family. We didn't just lose a wonderful Dr. We lost an amazing friend. We will hold close to our hearts all the wonderful cook outs and bonfires at the lake, bless you for being a part of our lives.

My first meeting with Dr. Selke was 10 years ago at St. Luke's, he was decked out in his jeans. In April Dr. Selke inserted a stent in one of my arteries. The nurses played soft rock music during the procedure because it relaxed him. I also found out that the nurses loved this man. Over the years I talked to him about his wide range of life's experiences. Dr. Selke will be greatly missed in the Bond County community and will be remembered for his support of the Farm Museum.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Dr. Selke's family.  My heart is broken today in sadness for this great man who has taken care of my heart all these years.  I called him my "Great Hope" and I will miss him...fly high Dr. Selke...

Dr Selke was a bigger than life character. He was the first 'neighbor' I met when I moved to Greenville. His kindness and gentle soul is what first struck me. The minute I drove up he came out and helped me get my kayak into the garage. He spoke lovingly of his wife and children and his love of the lake. 
As a neighbor, his love of a hearty bonfire was always of concern to me and something I would tease him about. I jokingly nicknamed him the 'Pyro Doc.' He would let me know before one of his big burns so I could close up all my windows.
I would frequently send him updates on sightings of his two cats (Butch & Cookie) roaming around the property. Cookie would often come over to visit and seemed to always be complaining about something the doctor had done. I would let him know and he would report back that a door was closed or her food bowl was empty or something he had done made her mad. But he always new exactly what it was. He loved his cats and he respected the wildlife in the area.
I would also send him lake updates when the pelicans arrived or the flocks of geese surrounded the cove or eagle sightings and such. It was all new and exciting to me and he never seemed to mind that I alerted him to those sightings. 
It breaks my heart to think I won't see him out there anymore. Thank you Dr. Selke, your memory & kindness will always live on at the lake and in our hearts. I will toast to you at my honorary bonfire. Fly freely now amongst the angels.

We watched Kenny (that is what he is known as in our town) play many high school basketball games on Friday and Saturday nights in Southeastern Indiana. It is touching that he had a fondness for Oliver tractors which his family sold in their business in Sunman. The pictures are touching. They depict a man who loved his family and one who loved adventure. Your hearts must be broken. You are in our thoughts and in our prayers.

Without a doubt, our very DEEPEST and most SINCERE condolences to the Selke family. Our families go YEARS back in time, beginning in 1956. Our Father was the school superintendent in Sunman, Indiana and Ken's Dad was the president of the school board. Our families were VERY close, as we vacationed together and shared MANY events. Without getting in to detail, we kept in touch with the rest of the family and were always interested along Ken's journey through life. Enough said for now. God's Peace to the Selke family.

Doctor Selke was my cardiologist and was critical in correcting my heart issues through his expertise and his ties to St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis.  He was a tremendous asset to our community, and those of us who live in Greenville will miss him personally and professionally.

I only knew him a short time but he was there in ER when I needed him. Doctor Selke will always be respected and remembered.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Selke's passing.  He was my mother's cardiologist.  I told him I had a story about him and he was very interested in it.  I had taken my mother to the hospital ER and her doctor, Dr. Richard Funneman had to bribe her with a Dr. Pepper to get her to stay so that Dr. Selke could see her and check her heart.  Dr. Funneman to Dr. Selke he had to walk in to Mother's room with a Dr. Pepper and he did!.  He laughed at the story and remembered Mother.  My prayers are for peace and comfort during this time.

No words or actions can repay the gratitude that we have for Doc saving our father a few years ago.  His sudden passing has left a hole in our community as it has done in your hearts.  May you find comfort in knowing that Doc touched so many lives.

Dr. Selke has been our family's Cardiologist for the past  28 years. He was always there when we needed him. He was the only Dr I know that would answer the office phone when everyone in the office was busy. He will be deeply missed by many. Our prayers go out to his family.
