

Joost, Laura Alice (nee Reed) born May 26,1917, died Wednesday June 8, 2011. Beloved wife of the late Nicholas Teynac Joost, Jr. (died March 23, 1980) for 37 years. Laura is survived by her three children: Laura Margaret Anna Joost-Kuhn (Bernie Joel Kuhn), Mary Elizabeth Joost Lanigan (James Richard Lanigan, Jr.), Nicholas Teynac Joost, III; grandchildren, Kelley Tompkins Rice (William Rice), John C. Tompkins, Jr., Robert Tompkins (Angela), Nicholas Tompkins (Amy), Laura Marie Lanigan, and James Richard Lanigan III, Daughter of the late Fleda Jane Morris Reed and Ralph Alton Reed of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Sister to the late Nola Reed Hankins (late-Joseph Banks Hankins), late Ralph Alton Reed, Jr. (Joyce Chambers Reed), and the late Doris Jane Reed. Survived by sisters-in-law Rita Joost (the late Hobart Joost), Mary Isabel (Dolly) Joost Coppedge (James Coppedge), and Joyce Chambers Reed and many nieces, nephews and their children.
Laura received a B.S. from the Womens State College now called the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1937. In 1939, Laura earned a Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Laura met a young doctoral candidate in English, Nicholas Teynac-Joost, Jr., from Jacksonville, Florida. They married May 25, 1943. Laura and Nicholas lived serveral places while establishing their family and careers. Valdosta, Georgia, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Chicago, Illinois, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Alton, Illinois, where they raised their three children. Upon Laura and Nicholas' retirements from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Illinois, they retired to Nicholas' hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Nicholas died in 1980 and Laura remained in
Jacksonsville until 2003 when Laura moved to Chesterfield, Missouri to be near her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Joost Lanigan.
While living in Jacksonville, Laura was an active volunteer at the Cummer Museum, San Jose Catholic Church and a member of the Jacksonville Garden Club. Laura also was an avid bridge player and interested in bible studies. Wherever, Laura lived, she made many friends, and she will be missed so much by her family and friends.
After Laura's remains are cremated, her life will be celebrated with a mass at San Jose Catholic Church, 3619 Toledo Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32217 on Saturday July 2 at 10 A.M. preceded by a visitation with the family at 9:15 A.M. immediately following the funeral mass. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32217.
