Marjorie Dale (Godbold) Schuchat

Beloved wife of William (Bill) Schuchat; loving sister-in-law of Dee Schuchat, Lanie (Steve) Kodner, and Stanley (Pam) Schuchat; aunt of Joe (Holly) Kodner and Tracy Kodner (Jared Loy); stepmother to her best friend’s daughter, Julie Daigle Duncan, who was like the daughter Marjorie never had. Marjorie had struggled with her short-term memory loss for several years.

Marjorie was born in Pensacola, Fl to the late John Dale Godbold and Marjorie Abbott Godbold. She was close with her uncle Bert Godbold and her aunts Angeline (Hannie) Buck, Hazel Abbott and Dorthy (Dot) Abbott Cox. Marjorie grew up in East Pensacola Heights and graduated from Pensacola High School. She attended Florida State University and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

Marjorie was married for 16 years prior to marrying Bill in 1975 and was hesitant to marry again. She loved her freedom after her first marriage and was reluctant to give it up. Fortunately, for both her and Bill, she overcame her reluctance; they had a wonderful partnership and celebrated a 50th anniversary last year.

She had a lovely house in Creve Coeur, but had a list of seven things she wanted when looking to move. A realtor showed her a home one day which did not work for her and she explained to him while standing in the rain that what she really wanted was a house in Kehrs Mill Trails subdivision which she did not think they could afford. He called her the next day to say that he found one that he thought would fill the seven wants; she responded that she knew which one he was talking about and “it was the ugliest house in the neighborhood.” She lived there for more than 42 years.

Marjorie was a brave, courageous woman who was active in the Mental Health Association of West Florida and voter registration drives in the 1960s. After moving to St. Louis, she was active in the abortion rights movement, lobbied for legislation in Jefferson City, and was a site coordinator at the Hope Clinic in Granite City, Ill. Marjorie was active in Planned Parenthood and NARAL and Fighting for Racial Justice. She was also an active volunteer for Circle of Concern, driving to school collections for food and making food distributions in the city to areas where many West Countians would fear to venture.

She learned to macrame and knit and absolutely loved gardening. She was active in her church, Christ Church Cathedral, in downtown St. Louis and dismissed comments that going into the city was too dangerous. In addition to gardening at her church, Marjorie was a member of a gardening club where they spent time gardening in public spaces in the city. She had her own wonderful flower garden and pond in her backyard which Bill under-appreciated. Marjorie fell and injured her knee in March 2025 and has been unable to garden since then and greatly missed it. During this time, she knitted caps for homeless people which were distributed through her church.

She loved her pet dogs as much as her husband and has had one since she was 14 years old. Mostly Irish and Gordon Setters and in later years when she and Bill could not lift a setter, she switched to Welsh Corgis. Marjorie had a dream that repeated periodically where two of her setters drove off in her car and the Irish, Sad Sack, was looking out the back saying “we’re in trouble now.”

Marjorie always said that she would never get to retire since she worked out of her home, but she did retire from cooking and mostly ate at restaurants for the past several years. Bill asked her to teach him to cook, but she said it was too late for that.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 10 at 2 pm at BERGER MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 9430 Olive Blvd., Olivette, MO 63132. Visitation begins Thursday at 1:30 PM at Berger Memorial. A private burial at New Mt Sinai Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marjorie’s memory may be made to Christ Church Cathedral, 1210 Locust Street, St. Louis, MO 63103, the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63110 or to the charity of one's choice.
