He was a loving and devoted husband for 68 years to Jacquelyn (Jackie) Schneider Lipsitz; dear brother and brother-in-law to Pearl (z”l) and Don (z”l) Soffer; he was the adoring father of Ellen (Aaron Franzel), Nancy Lipsitz (Kirk Barton), and Susan (Bob Cohen). Proud and loving Grandfather to Sarah and Micah Franzel, Benjamin, Talia and Aden Barton, and Zach and Josh Cohen. Loving Stepbrother-in-law of Gail (Charles Eisenkramer), Judy Baum, Richard (Carol) Baum, and Sandy (z”l) Baum. He was loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good and long lasting friends spanning a lifetime of 92 years.
Marty attended Soldan-Blewett High School and then went on to spend one year at Grinnell University before earning a bachelor’s degree and a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. He was a proud member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and as a youngster he was an active boy scout in the popular Troop 90. He served as president of the Young Democrats in the 60s.
Marty practiced law for over 60 years. His clients became his friends and he was devoted to each of them. Marty was proud of his friendships from Dozier School, high school and college and later years. He will be missed by many from all walks of his life.
The most important part of Marty's life was his family. His wife, Jackie, his daughters and grandchildren were the love of his life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle and friend. His eyes lit up with a big smile on his face when the family came to visit. Visits were especially meaningful as his memory declined. He was proud to share family stories with the younger generation. Wiggling his ears was a must for the youngest and quirky jokes endeared him to others. Additionally there was never a dog that Marty didn't love.
Marty and Jackie moved into The Gatesworth in April 2024 and there he acquired a new extended family. He earned his nickname The Walker as he spent his first year walking the halls daily, and meeting and making new friends.
The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, August 17 at 10 AM at Congregation Shaare Emeth, 11645 Ladue Road with a 9:30 a.m. visitation preceding the service. Interment will take place at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be directed to the St. Louis Jewish Food Pantry, the Rabbi Jeffrey B. Stiffman Lecture Fund at Congregation Shaare Emeth, the St. Louis Zoo or a charity of your choice.
