

Mary Ann was born September 12, 1934 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Lewis and Alice Smith Meckes. She married David Gelfand on November 21, 1953 in Quincy.
Mary Ann attended St Boniface Catholic School and Quincy High School, both in Quincy.
While she was in high school, Mary Ann worked at Brown Drug Store in Quincy. She moved to St Louis in 1952 to work at Western Electric. Mary Ann also worked at Rexall Drug Company in St Louis. She then took a hiatus from work to raise her four children. From 1975 to 2006, Mary Ann worked at Red Lobster locations in North St Louis County, Northern Virginia, and St Charles; she especially enjoyed her Red Lobster family and her loyal customers.
Mary Ann was a Den Leader for Boy Scouts and a Troop Leader for Girl Scouts in Cahokia, Illinois. She enjoyed her time as a room mother and volunteer at St Catherine Laboure in Cahokia. She was also a volunteer with the American Red Cross at Gorgas Hospital in Panama.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Alice Smith Meckes; her husband, David; her daughter, Kay Glassman; her great-grandson, Jesse Andersen; and her brothers, Raymond Meckes and Richard Meckes.
Mary Ann is survived by her son Greg (Ann) Gelfand of Olivette; Laura (Lou) Roberts of Daphne, Ala.; and Cheryl (Mike) Grant of Chesterfield; ten grandchildren: Jon (Megan) Glassman and Meg (Jack) Hudson; Katherine Gelfand; Corey, Kevin, and Caitlyn Roberts; and Michael Brown and Andrew, Chloe, and Maeve Grant; three great-grandchildren: Adelaide and Genevieve Glassman, and Johnny Hudson; sisters Shirley Bornman of Quincy and Patricia Meckes of Quincy; sister-in-law Ann Meckes of Springfield, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ann will be inurned at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with her husband David. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association or St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
