Melissa was a daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, and friend whose presence touched many lives. She is survived by her father, Thomas Schiller, and his wife, HelenMary; her mother, Susie Briggs, and her husband, Randall; her sister, Susie Shinn (partner, Allan); her brothers, Scott (wife, Amanda), Peter (fiancée, Olivia), Jeremy (wife, Corinna), and Benjamin (wife, Jennie); and her grandmother, Helene Singer. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and a nephew, all of whom loved her more than she likely knew.
Melissa loved New York City, especially the Upper West Side, where she found beauty in everyday moments. She had an eye for fashion and a love of photographs, capturing people, places, and feelings in a way that reflected how she saw the world.
Earlier in her life, she found joy in playing the guitar, an expression of her creativity and spirit. A favorite song of hers by the Byrds recalls the Book of Ecclesiastes:
To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn, turn. And a time to every purpose, under heaven.
Melissa was quick with a witty remark, often bringing lightness and humor into conversations. Those who knew her remember her sweet smile and abrupt laugh.
Melissa’s life held both darkness and light. She is remembered with compassion, love, and a deep sense of loss. May her memory be a blessing.
