I am so sad to hear this. Richard and I reconnected through Facebook a number of years ago and had several+ conversations by e-mail. We went way back to high school and AZA together and he was always a pleasure to be with. His subtle humor was a reflection of his high intelligence.

I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. It was only recently your dad contacted me on facebook to ask if I was the wife of the late Ken Vaccaro who was a neighbor and friend growing up on Waldron Ave. in U. City. It touched me that he was such a nice guy to call and tell me of all the fun they had as kids.
Please accept my deepest sympathy.

You know I feel a special affinity for the Pearl family.  Although I did not know Richard well, I can imagine how much family meant to him and how much you will miss him.  Ann's and my thoughts are with you.  We are so sorry for your loss.

I know Richard was looking forward to our 50th reunion this September in St. Louis.  This is what he sent to us in December about his last 50 years for inclusion in our reunion book:
By and large, I've spent my years working in and around the newspaper business and writing freelance. I've also done retail (paint and wallpaper, office supplies, cellular phones), outside sales (newspaper advertising, paint), hospital public relations and multi-level marketing. I've tried professional fundraising and have even delivered pizzas and cleaned offices. But the newspaper biz and writing always attracted me, and when I wasn't working at a paper, I was writing freelance, "to keep my hand in," as they say.

In total, I worked fulltime for three dailies, three weeklies and one twice-weekly. Those jobs put me in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan. The freelancing was in the St. Louis and Detroit areas and I'm still doing a little now, in addition to publicity for my synagogue here in suburban Philadelphia, PA.

My writing was always my focus and I'm happy to say I did win an award, for a breaking-news story, back in 1999. It was for third place, but it was from my peers in Michigan newspapering and I will always treasure it.

Please accept my sincere condolances for the loss of Richard; his writings and thoughts will  be missed. He was a very compassionate and interesting man; I'm just sorry I didn't get to know him better.
