Bob was born in St Louis, where he spent almost all 96 years. The only exception was his Army service during the Korean War, which was a source of incredible pride. He attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School, CBC High School and St. Louis University, where he majored in Commerce & Finance. He maintained close friendships with many of his classmates well into retirement, though he was the last survivor.
After graduation he met a beautiful Valley Park girl who “was unlike any woman he had ever met.” She instantly swept him off his feet, and they were blessed with almost 73 years of marriage. Mary Ann was his reason for living these last few years. His devotion and love were second to none. Without their love, there are 31 people on this planet that would not exist!
Marriage soon brought 6 daughters in 7+ years. All were taught to be strong and succeed in all life endeavors. He was a beloved Dad, the epitome of honesty, integrity, loyalty and unconditional love. He ruled the roost, and when he got home from work the TV was HIS, no matter what we were watching. His love of sports engendered a similar love in all his offspring.
Poor guy was outnumbered by girls most of his life! Of 14 grandkids, only 4 were boys. And of 11 great-grandkids, only 1 is a boy. Wow, did Bob love it when sons-in-law came along to do “guy stuff”.
Bob & Mary Ann bought a chalet and spent many fun years at Innsbrook. This was a blessing for the whole family, as many memorable moments were created lakeside there. Bob and the sons-in-law treasured days on the golf course, where many fish stories were born. He also taught many of the grandkids how to fish as well.
He was a talented pitcher for his high school team, until WWII caused a pause in all sports. He played tennis, golfed, read voraciously (especially history books on the Civil War) and spent early retirement travelling the world with Mary Ann to feed their shared interest in history/geography. They planned their trips around family events, rarely missing a chance to show pride in those they loved.
Bob was a born leader and dedicated servant for Kriegshauser Mortuaries, Rotary Club, St. Richard Parish, Alexian Brothers Hospital, and many historic and jazz causes. He outlived almost all those in his blood line by more than 10 years (except Fr Laurence who is going strong at 85). This was particularly noteworthy since his family fought early heart disease. He was the ultimate gentleman and role-model for all he met.
