

Roy Milton Mendelsohn was born on May 24, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Bernice Katz and Abraham Mendelsohn. Roy graduated from the University of Illinois, School of Medicine in 1952. He served in the Navy during World War II. Roy completed his psychiatric training at Menninger's Institute. He married Arlene Joy Pick in 1949 and they settled in St. Louis, Missouri to raise their four children: Barie, Gail, Lynn, and Mark. He practiced as a child/adult psychoanalyst in St. Louis, Missouri for over 50 years before retiring in 2013. His wife of almost sixty years, Arlene, preceded him in death in 2009.
They are succeeded by four children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Barie Joy lives in Denver, Colorado, and has four adult daughters (Kerry King, Katie Frost, Lauren Grey, and Anne Joy). Gail Cloud lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her husband Dave. Her son Zeb Williams lives in Charlottesville. Lynn Mendelsohn lives in St. Louis with her ten-year-old son, Jacob. Mark Jeffrey Mendelsohn lives with his family (his wife, Julie and their daughters, Kristen and Rebecca) in Charlottesville, Virginia. Roy's family and his work meant the world to him.
Roy is the author of eight books. A four volume set, The Synthesis of Self; The Manifest Dream and it's use in therapy; Leaps: Facing risks in offering a constructive therapeutic response when unusual measures are necessary; How can Talking Help; Pearls, From Irritation to Beauty; and My Role Model is Mr. Magoo, which tells personal stories of wisdom and learning.
Services: Memorial visitation at Kriegshauser West, 9450 Olive Blvd on Saturday, July 11from 12 noon until time of Service at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow the service at the Funeral Home. Shiva at 38 Queensbrook Place, Olivette, MO 63132, from 3:30 pm until 6:30 pm.
