A MESSAGE FROM THE FAMILY
Scott was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on September 14, 1953, the first-born son of William R. Thompson and Nancy S. Thompson. In 1957 the family moved to St. Louis. Scott attended schools in the Ferguson-Florissant school district, graduating from McCluer Senior High School in 1972. At that time the class sizes had become so large (1,382 students in his class) that the students attended split sessions, allowing him to attend school in the morning and go to work at his father’s business in the afternoon. Sports were emphasized in Scott’s family and became an important part of his youth. He most enjoyed playing baseball and football. Starting in 1962 and continuing through college, football became his focus. The sport provided him with the thrill of excelling with his teams, thus developing his strong sense of leadership and determination. Scott went on to attend Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) where he studied business. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1976, he returned to St. Louis to work at his father’s business, Thompson Culvert Company. He eventually took over the family-owned business. In September 1984 Scott married Blair Young, previously from Chicago, Illinois. They settled in Creve Coeur where they raised their three children, Adam, Kristen, and Bryan. Despite his many business obligations, Scott always tried to be present and actively involved in his children’s various activities. He thoroughly enjoyed seeing them grow and achieve. He once reflected that “The most important thing I can do as a parent is to stay in touch, involved and close to them.” He was extremely proud of his children’s accomplishments, and especially delighted in his expanded role as a grandfather. Travel became a passion for Scott and Blair. Over the years the family celebrated the Millenium in Antarctica, journeyed through much of western Europe, visited various countries in Central and South America, and went on several African safaris. Scott took great pleasure in meeting the people of other nations, learning about their culture and experiencing new environments, but he most enjoyed seeing his children become equally inspired by the travel experience. Scott was a member of the SMSU Founders Club, the Society of American Military Engineers, several Missouri Chambers of Commerce, and actively participated as an executive on state, regional and national boards of industry-related associations. He participated in various forum and TEC groups and was a dedicated supporter of St. Louis arts, culture and humanities. Scott was an avid St. Louis sports fan, regularly attending games and cheering on the Cardinals, Blues, Battlehawks and the new St Louis CITY SC. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, sharing experiences, opinions, camaraderie and fine wines. He will be missed by all.
